#24 - EINION AP LLYWARCH
Bartrum offers two different pedigrees
for men of this name:
(1) "Einionn ap Llywarch ap Rriridd
ap Mor ap Ynyr ap Pasgen ap Urien Reged, iarll Reged ac wedy hynny i bu ef vrenin yn Yssgoittlond ac ef a bioedd Kydweli a
Charnwllon ac Issgennen a holl Wyr ai fferth ac ef a wnaeth holl gestyll y tervynau hynny"
(2) "Einion ap Llywarch ap Kynhaethwy
ap Gwrwared ap Ssaisyllt ap Rrvn ap Llywarch ap Rriddyd ap Mor ap Pasgen ap Urien Rreged"
In notes to these pedigrees,
he tells us:
"Einion ap Llywarch, born c.
1150, was ancestor of a tribe in Iscennen and Cydweli, Ystrad Tywy. The most important family of the tribe was that
of Rice of Newton and Dynevor. The shorter version (#1) is older than the longer one in the extant manuscripts, but
it seems possible the the longer one is the more accurate of the two, the shorter one being derived by homoeoteleuton.
The longer one gives the date c. 850 for the birth of Pasgen ap Urien."
COMMENTS:
These are pedigrees of two different
men named Einion ap Llywarch[1]. Pedigree #1 cites a man born c. 1005 who was the ancestor of Sir Elidyr Ddu of c. 1160.
Pedigree #2 is a same-named man born c. 1165 who was ancestor of the Rice family and of Sir Rhys ap Thomas. Within
this extended family, there were at least two more occurrances of the name with men born c. 1095 and c. 1130.
The Pasgen ap Urien in both
pedigrees was born c. 850 and clearly was NOT a son of the 6th century Urien Rheged, but was a man of Rhos in Gwynedd as described
in Patriarch #22 - Collwyn ap Tangno.
The Welsh phrase contained in
Pedigree #1 says that he was lord of the commotes of Cydweli, Carnawllon, Is Cennen and all Gower, and held all the castles
in that territory. This refers to Pasgen, not his father Urien.
