NOTES:
[1] This family held the manors of Downes and
Taxhall in Cheshire and this Robert was a forester
[2] William de Downes acquired lands at Shrigley, also in Chester
[3] This Robert Downes is described as "armiger" on a monument at Prestbury,
probably bearing the arms of Sir William "sable, a stag (or buck) lodged argent".
He and his son, Robert, both died the same year and are buried at Prestbury;
on their monument, these arms are impaled with the arms of his wife and again with those of his son's wife
