                                  SOURCE  REFERENCE  ABBREVIATIONS
                                            ANCIENT WALES STUDIES

The papers we publish on this site have, unless otherwise noted, footnotes which support factual genealogical claims which we have asserted. Where our source is one we seldom use, it is described as to author, title of the work, year published, etc.  However, sources we use often are generally presented in abbreviated form.  The following is a list of those abbreviations, grouped according to the type of the source:

1.  Early manuscript collections:

Pen. = Peniarth Ms described by the number assigned by its holder
Harl. = Harleian Ms also described by an assigned number
BM Add = British Museum Additional Ms, described by number
Bodleian Add = Bodleian Library at Oxford University Additional Ms, described by number

2.  Early Welsh Genealogical Tracts, an assembly of manuscripts published by Peter Bartrum, 1966:

ByS = Bonedd y Saint (lineage of the Saints)
ByA = Bonedd yr Arwyr (lineage of the Heroes)
     JC 20 = Jesus College Ms. 20
ABT = Achau Brenhinoedd a Thywysogion Cymru (pedigrees of the Welsh Kings and Princes)
HLG = Hen Lwythau Gwynedd a'r Mars (pedigrees of old patriarchs of North Wales and the March)

3.  Annual Journals of Historical Societies:

Arch Cam = Archaeological Cambrensis (journal of the Cambrian Archaeological Assn)
Trans. Soc of Cymm =  Transactions of the Honorable Society of Cymmrodorion
Y Cymm = Y Cymmrodor, The Magazine of the Honorable Society of Cymmrodorion
Mont. Coll = Collections Related to Montgomeryshire (journal of the Powys-land Club)
BBCS = Bulletin of the Board of Celtic Studies
NLW Journal = The National Library of Wales Journal
WW Hist. = West Wales Historical Records (magazine of the Historical Society of West Wales)

4.  Welsh Annals and Chronicles:

A/C = Annales Cambriae, events recorded by date
ByT = Brut y Tywysogyon or Chronicle of the Princes
There are 3 modern published versions edited by Thomas Jones:
                     Peniarth Ms 20 version
                     Red Book of Hergest version
                     Brenhinedd y Saesson version

5.  Heraldic Visitation Pedigrees:

Dwnn i, ii =  Lewys Dwnn, "Visitations of Wales 1586-1613", 2 volumes published in 1846

Vis. Shrop = "Visitation of Shropshire, 1623", 2 volumes published in 1889

6.  Books of Pedigrees:

LB = "Llyfr Baglan".  Collected by John Williams, 1600-1607, published in 1910
(mostly men and families of Southeast Wales)

PAC = "Pedigrees of Anglesey and Carnarvonshire Families", Charts by J.E. Griffith, 1914
(this author presents family tree charts without providing any data showing his sources)

     WG 300-1400 = Peter Bartrum's "Welsh Genealogies AD 300-1400", 8 volumes published 1974
(sources are provided for individual names, but assembling names into family charts was often poorly handled, so conflations and generation gaps are extensive)
