#3 - GWAITHFOED OF CEREDIGION

        Bartrum suggests this pedigree:

"Cadifor ap Gwaithfoed ap Eunydd ap Cadifor ap Peredur Beiswyrdd"

        In his notes, he says:

"Gwaithfoed of Ceredigion (born c. 1070).  He was father of Cydiform from whom many families in Ceredigion were descended; and of Gwallog (Pen. 131 pp 302/3; Dwnn i, 96).  He could also be the Gwaithfoed mentioned by Giraldus Cambrensis as the father of Ednywain, Lay Abbott of Llanbadarn Fawr."

We believe the pedigree given by Bartrum is precisely that of Gwaithfoed of Meirionydd (#2 in this series of patriarchs).  Our construction makes the Gwaithfoed of Ceredigion the grandson of Gwaithfoed of Meirionydd, and would insert in front of Bartrum's pedigree "Gwaithfoed ap Cadifor" and date his birth as c. 1160.  This Cadifor was a brother of Genillin ap Gwaithfoed of Meirionydd.

The "Gwallog" mentioned by Bartrum was the son of a wholly different Gwaethfoed, the one of Buellt born c. 1090 and descended from Elystan Glodrydd.  Giraldus Cambrensis made his journey through Wales in 1188 and describes an Ednywain ap Gwaithfoed as an "old man who had grown grey in iniquity" and was usurping the office of abbott at Llanbadarn Fawr.  He would fit chronologically as a son of Gwaithfoed of Meirionydd born c. 1130, not Gwaithfoed of Ceredigion.
