#16 - RHYS GOCH of YSTRAD YW

For this man, Bartrum offered 4 different pedigrees:

        (1) "Rys goch ap Ivor ap Eignon vab arglwydd Kyrnyw"

        (2) "Rys goch ap Meinyrch arglwydd Ystrad Yw"

        (3) "Rys goch kyff kenedl Ystrad Yw ap Rricert ap Einion ap Gwngudd"
        (4) "Rys [goch] ap Rickart ap Einion ap Gloyw ap Hoyw ap Hyfaidd henllyn ap Kradog craichvras arglwydd Maes Hyfaidd"

In his notes to the pedigrees, Bartrum says:

"The genealogies point to a date of about 1070 for his birth.  He could have been a son of Maenyrch as in [#15 in this series] but the best texts make him son or grandson of Einion.  Hyfaidd Henllyn is presumably supposed to have given his name to Maes Hyfaidd (Radnor).  The epithet seems to be a corruption of Unllen.  Hyfaidd Unllen appears without parentage in Culhwch ac Olwen (WM 462, RM 107) and Breuddwyd Rhonabwy (RM 159).

PEDIGREE 1:

While omitting Richert between Ifor and Einion, this pedigree refers to a different man named Rhys Goch; this man was a brother of the father of the Rhys Goch Lord of Ystrad Yw.  Neither man had any connection to Cernyw.

PEDIGREE 2:

We believe this pedigree is correct, but does not carry his ancestry back far enough to identify the Maenyrch who was his father.

PEDIGREE 3:

Although this pedigree omits two generations, Rhys Goch did descend from Richert ap Einion...but whether this Einion was a son of Gwynngy or Selyf is uncertain[1].

PEDIGREE 4:

Like #3 above, this pedigree seeks to attach Rhys Goch to the family descended from the c. 475 Caradog Freich Fras.  It also omits the names of the father and grandfather of Rhys Goch.

BARTRUM'S NOTES:

We agree Rhys Goch was born c. 1070, but our analysis finds he had an uncle (not Lord of Ystrad Yw) also called Rhys Goch in the pedigree material and born c. 1045.  We do not agree, however, that the father of either man was the Maenyrch who fathered Bleddyn.

Our preferred chart of this extended family links it with the Irish Deisi tribe:
NOTICE:  In a recent review of this family, we suggest that the c. 945 Einion in this chart was the son of Gwynngy ap Hydd Hwgan in the ancestry of Bleddyn ap Maenyrch.  See that paper at this link:
