#19 - GRUFFUDD FRASLWYD
Bartrum suggest a single pedigree
for this man:
"Gruffudd Fraslwyd ap Gruffudd
ap Meilyr ap Selyf ap Brochwel ap Aeddan ap Cyngen ap Eliseg..."
His note on this pedigree reads:
"Gruffudd Fraslwyd, of Pwll
Glas in Trefeglwys near Llanidloes, Arwystli. His birth was c. 1300. The male line of his descendants seems to
have died out after five generations."
COMMENTS:
Called "fat and gray",
this Gruffudd was born c. 1255 as the second of four consecutive men named Gruffudd. The family seems to have "daughtered
out" in the 16th century, the last male being Lewys ap Dafydd ap Llewelyn ap Dafydd ap Llewelyn Hirfain ap Gruffudd Fychan
ap Gruffudd Llwyd ap Gruffudd Frasllwyd ap Gruffudd.[1]
The Brochwel ap
Aeddan in his ancestry was not "ap Cyngen ap Eliseg"[2], but Brochwel IV of c. 1110 ap Aeddan IV ap Selyf III.[3] The
Meilyr ap Selyf was a son of Selyf IV:
1045 Selyf III
l
1075 Aeddan IV
l
1110 Brochwel IV
l
1145 Selyf IV
l
1185 Meilyr[4]
l
1220 Gruffudd
l
1255 Gruffudd Frasllwyd
NOTES:
[1] Dwnn 1, 317 cites Catryn ferch Lewys ap Dafydd who married Owain Gwyn ap
Llewelyn Llwyd of Llanidloes, Arwystli, as the only known child of the last male in this family
[2] Eliseg, of Pillar fame, had no son named Cyngen. Probably the pedigree
author meant Cyngen ap Brochwel ap Eliseg, father of the first Aeddan who named a son Brochwel
[3] The entire pedigree back to the c. 685 Eliseg is shown in our paper
#18 for Maredudd Benwyn
[4] Some would equate this Meilyr with the c. 1190 Meilyr Gryg of Gregynog,
but see the paper "The First Meilyr Gryg of Gregynog" at the link below:
