#30 - CILMIN DROED DDU

 
       Bartrum presents a single pedigree for this man:
 
       (1)  "Cilmin Droed Droetu ap Cadrod ap Gwriad ap Elidir ap Sandde...."
 
       In his notes to this pedigree, Bartrum says "He was born c. 830 and was ancestor of one of Pymtheg Llwyth Gwynedd (Noble Tribes of Gwynedd) in Arfon Uwch Gwyrfai.  The pedigree makes Cilmin first cousin to Rhodri Mawr which is chronologically possible.  Like his uncle, Merfyn Frych, he is said to have come from the Isle of Man."
 
COMMENTS:
 
      Cilmin's father, Cadrod, was a younger brother of Merfyn Frych, and accompanied him to Anglesey in 816. It is not known why Cilmin was called "with the black foot" but a folk tale recited in the 18th century gives this explanation:  "Cilmin assisted a magician to steal the books of a demon.  He was pursued by the demon, but in leaping over a brook which was to be the limit of the pursuit, Cilmin's left leg plunged into the water and became black."  We date him as born c. 825 and agree that his pedigree earlier than Cadrod is identical to the pedigree of Merfyn Frych.
