#34
- CADIFOR ap DYFNWAL
Bartrum offers 3 pedigrees for this man and his "brothers", Rhun ap Dyfnwal and Blegywryd ap Dinawal:
(1)
Cydivor ap Dinawal ap Eunydd ap Aelaw ap Alsser ap Tudwal ap Rhodri Mawr
(2)
Rhun ap Dinawal ap Dyfric ap Rhun ap Alun Dyfed
(3)
Cydifor and Rhun and Blegywyrd ap Dinawal ap Gwyn ap Gwelw gwinffrwyd ap Dafydd du taris of Mon ap Dafydd ap Owain Gwynedd.
[1]
In his notes, Bartrum dates the birth of Cadifor to c. 1130 and thinks Blegywryd was his brother.
However, he dates the birth of Rhun to c. 1170 and says he was probably not a brother of Cadifor and Blegywryd. He appears
to reject pedigree (2) outright since he says Alun Dyfed was a traditional hero of the sixth century. Pedigree (3) was
wholly rejected by Bartrum as "obviously chronologically impossible".
OUR
ANALYSIS:
PEDIGREE
1:
When speaking of the Cadifor who scaled the walls of Cardigan Castle in 1165, this version
is the only one of the three that contains credible elements. It errs by omitting Tudwal as the father of Dyfnwal, and
also omits a second pair of "Aelan ap Alser" before reaching Tudwal Gloff.
PEDIGREE
2:
We identify a Rhun (1130) ap Dyfnwal as the older brother of Cadifor and reject this version
as complete nonsense which seeks to tie Rhun to mythical heroes of the dark-ages era.
PEDIGREE
3:
This pedigree speaks of a wholly different family which also contained men called Cadifor, Blegoryd
and Rhun ap Dyfnwal, but who lived at much earlier dates than those descended from Tudwal Gloff. We have examined this
pedigree in detail in our paper at the link below:

NOTES:
[1]
We suggest the first "ap Dafydd" in this pedigree is misplaced and belongs immediately preceding the second "ap Dafydd".
Next we would delete the "ap" following Gwyn since "gwelw" is not a male name, but means "pale". This allows Gwyn to be described
as "with a pale white stream flowing over the black earth of Mon"
