PEDIGREE OF "EDNOWAIN BENDEW II"
By Darrell Wolcott
This pedigree, which extends
down to about the year 1400, uses the same sources cited by Peter Bartrum in his "Welsh Genealogies - AD 300-1400" but assembles
the data in a chronologically consistent manner, leaving no time gaps nor any of the anachronisms found in his charts.
It clearly distinquishes between all the same-named men whom Bartrum assumed were a single man. Names are spelled
according to our own preferred orthography; all birthdate estimates are ours and have been rounded to the nearest year ending
with 0 or 5.
For every child and
every marriage connection claimed, our sources for the data immediately follow the narrative in red type. In many cases,
there are more sources than shown but if one source extends the person's ancestry back more generations than all others, only
that source is cited. In the majority of cases, no single source cites more than 3 or 4 generations so it is necessary
to "connect" the person's ancestry by reference to distinctly separate sources...and this joining of sources may be required
more than once to reach back to a well-known ancestor. Each such connection introduces the opportunity for error. An
'A ap B ap C ap D' can easily be appended to a 'B ap C ap D ap E' of the wrong family when there are multiple men called
'B ap C ap D' found within the body of Welsh pedigree manuscripts. Our constructions often differ from those presented
by Bartrum, but all maintain a sound chronological timeline. Where particular problems exist, they are fully discussed
and reasons for choosing our construction are given. There can be no certainty that our choices, nor anyone else's, are
absolutely correct.
This family, like many
others of this era, showed a propensity for one branch to repeat a long string of male names which had occurred earlier in
another branch. Bartrum's charts do not admit of this possibility and consequently are filled with missing time gaps
and persons depicted as siblings who were born 30 or more years apart, as well as persons with 2 spouses born a generation
or more apart.

Index of names
1. Ednowain Bendew II, born c. 1050
This Tegeingl man, the father of Madog, was probably
identical to Owain ap Edwin. It is likely that when Owain's name was tarnished with a false "traitor" charge in the
16th century, the family descended from Madog substituted Owain's name with that of his father-in-law at the top of their
pedigree. Owain had married Morfydd ap Ednowain Bendew ap Neiniad. Bartrum calls him Ednowain Bendew II; whatever
his correct name, he had a son:
2. Madog
ap Ednowain Bendew
GENERATION 1
2. Madog ap Ednowain Bendew, born c. 1080
His wife is unknown and he is missing from most pedigrees,
which begin with his grandson also named Madog. He had two sons:
3. Iorwerth ap Madog
ap Ednowain
4. Rhiryd ap Madog
ap Ednowain
GENERATION 2
3. Iorwerth ap Madog ap Ednowain Bendew, born c. 1110
He married Arddun (c. 1120) ferch Llewelyn (c. 1085)
ap Owain (c. 1050) ap Edwin of Tegeingl (c. 1020), a lady who was probably his first-cousin. Most pedigrees confuse
him with his grandson, also called Iorwerth ap Madog. They had 3 sons:
5. Llewelyn ap Iorwerth ap Madog
6. Rhiryd ap Iorwerth ap Madog
7. Madog ap Iorwerth ap Madog
Pen. 287, 271 cites "Arddun ferch Llewelyn ap Owain" married "Iorwerth ap Madog
ap Ednowain Bendew". Dwnn ii, 304 & 325 extend her ancestry to "Llewelyn ap Owain ap Edwin"
Bartrum's charts omit these first two generations and equate this Iorwerth ap
Madog with #10 below. To make his chronology work, he emends the pedigree of Arddun to make her occur 2 generations
later as "ferch Llewelyn ap Owain ap Aldud ap Owain ap Edwin"
4. Rhiryd ap Madog ap Ednowain Bendew, born c. 1115
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
8. Einion ap Rhiryd
ap Madog
Dwnn ii, 325 cites "Rhiryd ap Madog ap Ednowain Bendew" but confuses him with
#11 below. This Rhiryd is the start of a 9 generation name string which was repeated 2 generations later with #11
GENERATION 3
5. Llewelyn ap Iorwerth ap Madog, born c. 1145
His wife is unknown and he had a single daughter:
Tangwystl, born c. 1180.
She married Maredudd (c. 1175) ap Cadwaladr (c. 1145) ap Cadwgan (c. 1115) ap Cadwaladr (c. 1080) ap Gruffudd (c. 1041) ap
Cynan (c. 1014) ap Idwal (c. 975). This was a cousin line of the better-known Gruffudd ap Cynan ap Iago ap Idwal who
died in 1137.
Harl. 1969, 110 cites "Tangwystl ferch Llewelyn ap Iorwerth ap Madog" married
"Maredudd ap Cadwaladr ap Gruyffudd ap Cynan". His family is universally cited with two generations omitted, skipping
from Cadwaladr ap Caradog to Cadwaladr ap Gruffudd, but the correct Cadwaladr can be dated c. 1145 from his inclusion in several
other pedigrees
6. Rhiryd ap Iorwerth ap Madog, born c. 1140
His wife is unknown, but he had a son and a daughter:
9. Einion ap Rhiryd ap Iorwerth
Tibod
ferch Rhiryd ap Iorwerth, born c. 1170. She married Ithel Gam Hen (c. 1155) ap Maredudd (c. 1120) ap Uchdryd of Cyfeiliog
(c. 1085) ap Uchdryd (c. 1055) ap Edwin of Tegeingl (c. 1020)
Dwnn ii, 304 cites "Rhiryd ap Iorwerth ap Madog"
Harl. 1971, 163 cites "Tibod ferch Rhiryd ap Iorwerth" married "Ithel Gam ap
Maredudd ap Uchdryd". That Uchdryd occurs in the generation of grandsons of Edwin, and we think he was a same-named
son of Uchdryd ap Edwin.
7. Madog ap Iorwerth ap Madog, born c. 1145
He wrongly appears as the son of Ednowain Bendew in
most pedigrees. He married Arddun (c. 1155) ferch Bradwen (c. 1125) ap Idnerth (c. 1095) ap Dafydd Ysgyd Aur (c. 1065)
ap Ednowain Aurdorchog (c. 1035) ap Llewelyn Aurdorchog, Lord of Ial (c. 1005). They had 2 sons:
10. Iorwerth ap
Madog ap Iorwerth
11. Rhiryd ap Madog
ap Iorwerth
All sources, including Dwnn ii, 304 & 325 and Pen. 287, 271, say Arddun married
Madog ap Ednowain Bendew, omitting 2 generations, and end her pedigree with Bradwen. Dwnn ii, 243 cites "Bradwen ap
Idnerth ap Dafydd Ysgyd Aur ap Owain Aurdorchog ap Llewelyn Aurdorchog", but HLG 5a calls that son of Llewelyn Aurdorchog
"Ednowain".
8. Einion ap Rhiryd ap Madog, born c. 1150
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
12. Madog ap
Einion ap Rhiryd
Pen. 287, 227 cites "Einion ap Rhiryd ap Madog" as
the father of Madog, but also see #16 below for a branch of the family which repeated a long string of names beginning 2 generations
after this one
GENERATION 4
9. Einion ap Rhiryd ap Iorwerth, born c. 1175
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
13. Madog ap Einion
ap Rhiryd
Pen. 131, 138 and Pen. 127, 24 cite "Einion ap Rhiryd ap Iorwerth ap Madog"
Pen. 131, 281 cites "Einion ap Rhiryd ap Iorwerth"
10. Iorwerth ap Madog ap Iorwerth, born c. 1180
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
14. Rhiryd ap Iorwerth
ap Madog
All sources omit one pair of "Iorwerth ap Madog" from families descended from
Iorwerth ap Madog ap Iorwerth ap Madog ap Ednowain Bendew
11. Rhiryd ap Madog ap Iorwerth, born c. 1175
He married Nest (c. 1185) ferch Gronwy (c. 1145)
ap Einion (c. 1110) ap Seisyllt of Meirionydd (c. 1080). They had 2 sons:
15. Iorwerth
ap Rhiryd ap Madog
16. Einion ap Rhiryd
ap Madog
Most sources confuse him with his uncle, Rhiryd ap Iorwerth ap Madog. Dwnn
ii, 325 cites "Nest ferch Gronwy ap Einion ap Seisyllt" married "Rhiryd ap Madog ap Ednowain Bendew" which omits the 2 generations
immediately below Ednowain
12. Madog ap Einion ap Rhiryd, born c. 1180
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
17. Llewelyn ap Madog
ap Einion
Pen. 287, 227 cites "Madog ap Einion ap Rhiryd" as
the father of Llewelyn, but also see #24 below
GENERATION 5
13. Madog ap Einion ap Rhiryd, born c. 1205
He married a daughter (c. 1215) ferch Richard
(c. 1180) ap Cadwaladr (c. 1145), a niece of the Maredudd ap Cadwaladr mentioned in #5 above. They had 2 sons:
18. Llewelyn
ap Madog ap Einion
19. Maredudd
ap Madog ap Einion
Harl. 1973, 110; Pen. 131,138; and Pen. 127,24 cite "Madog ap Einion ap Rhiryd"
Pen. 131, 119 and Pen. 129, 31 cite "a daughter of Richard ap Cadwaladr"
married "Madog ap Einion ap Maredudd". Peter Bartrum would strike Maredudd from that citation and substitute Rhiryd;
we agree
14. Rhiryd ap Iorwerth ap Madog, born c. 1210
He married a daughter of Sir Robert Pulford,
she born c. 1225. They had 2 sons:
20. Iorwerth
ap Rhiryd ap Iorwerth
21. Einion
ap Rhiryd ap Iorwerth
Pen. 127, 63; Pen. 128, 274a; and Pen. 139(1), 123 cite "a daughter of Sir Robert
Pulford married Rhiryd ap Iorwerth ap Madog". None of the sources extend the ancestry beyond Madog, leading most to
assume Madog ap Ednowain Bendew was meant, thus confusing this Rhiryd with #6 above
15. Iorwerth ap Rhiryd ap Madog, born c. 1210
His wife is unknown, but he had 2 sons:
22. Robert
ap Iorwerth ap Rhiryd
23. Rhiryd
ap Iorwerth ap Rhiryd
See #11 above; all sources omit one pair of "Iorwerth ap Rhiryd" from the family
of Iorwerth ap Rhiryd ap Iorwerth ap Rhiryd ap Madog" and, since both men (#32 below) had a son named Robert, most pedigrees
roll them into a single man
16. Einion ap Rhiryd ap Madog, born c. 1205
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
24. Madog ap Einion
ap Rhiryd
The sources confound this family branch with three others who had men named Madog
ap Einion ap Rhiryd. (see #13, #24 and #30). In two cases, the duplicate naming string continued "Einion ap Rhiryd
ap Iorwerth" while the other continued "Einion ap Rhiryd ap Madog". The 4 separate men called Einion
ap Rhiryd who each had a son Madog occur in c. 1150, c. 1175, c. 1205 and c. 1240.
17. Llewelyn ap Madog ap Einion, born c. 1210
His wife is unknown,
but he had a son:
25. Maredudd ap Llewelyn ap Madog
This is the family of Gruffudd of Bachymbyd in Colion, Dyffryn Clwyd. (#50 below) Refer
to Gruffudd of Llanfair (#40) for the problems in distinguishing one man from the other. We have made the
Bachymbyd man "Gruffudd ap Madog ap Maredudd ap Llewelyn ap Madog ap Einion ap Rhiryd" based on Pen. 287, 229 but that
name-string occurs elsewhere in this overall family, i.e. #82
GENERATION 6
18. Llewelyn ap Madog ap Einion, born c. 1240
He married Gwenhwyfar (c. 1250) ferch Gruffudd
(c. 1215) ap Iorwerth (c. 1185) ap Maredudd (c. 1150) ap Mathusalem (c. 1120) ap Hwfa (c. 1085) ap Cynddelw (c. 1050).
Hwfa ap Cynddelw served as steward to Owain Gwynedd and was named as founder of one of the 15 Noble Tribes of Gwynedd.
Llewelyn had a daughter:
Susanna ferch Llewelyn
ap Madog ap Einion, born c. 1275. She married Llewelyn (c. 1275) ap Ieuaf (c. 1240) ap Adda (c. 1205) ap Awr of Trevor(c.
1170)
Pen. 131, 281 cites "Llewelyn ap Madog ap Einion" married "Gwenhwyfar ferch Gruffudd
ap Iorwerth. Pen. 131, 100 extends her ancestry to "Gruffudd ap Iorwerth ap Maredudd ap Mathusalem ap Hwfa ap Cynddelw"
Pen. 129, 56 cites "Llewelyn ap Ieuaf ap Adda ap Awr" married "Susanna ferch
Llewelyn ap Madog ap Einion"
19. Maredudd ap Madog ap Einion, born c. 1235
For military services rendered to Gruffudd Maelor
II of Powys, he was granted the manor of Bodidris in Ial. His wife is unknown, but he had 2 sons:
26. Llewelyn
ap Maredudd ap Madog
27. Ieuaf
ap Maredudd ap Madog
Pen. 129, 181 cites "Maredudd ap Madog ap Einion ap Rhiryd"
20. Iorwerth ap Rhiryd ap Iorwerth, born c. 1245
He married Morfydd (c. 1255) ferch Gruffudd (c.
1225) ap Adda (c. 1195) ap Gruffudd Goch (c. 1165) ap Gweirydd (c. 1130) ap Rhys Goch of Anglesey (c. 1100). They had
4 sons and 2 daughters:
28. Robert
ap Iorwerth ap Rhiryd
29. Ieuan
ap Iorwerth ap Rhiryd
Gwyn
ap Iorwerth ap Rhiryd, born c. 1280, living 1313
Matthew ap Iorwerth ap Rhiryd, born c. 1275. Perhaps born "Madog", he was Bishop of Bangor from 1327 to 1357
Gwenllian ferch Iorwerth ap Rhiryd, born c. 1275. She married Gruffudd (c. 1260) ap Llewelyn (c. 1225) ap Ynyr (c. 1190).
Llewelyn ap Ynyr, descended from Sandde Hardd of Mortyn, was granted the manor of Gelligynan, Ial for military services rendered
to Gruffudd Maelor II of Powys c. 1256
Cathryn
ferch Iorwerth ap Rhiryd, born c. 1280. She married Iorwerth Fychan (c. 1275) ap Iorwerth Foel (c. 1240) ap Eginyr (c.
1210) descended from Idnerth Benfras of Maesbrook in Shropshire. She was his second wife and this may also have been
her second marriage.
Pen. 127, 63 cites "Iorwerth ap Rhiryd ap Iorwerth" married "Morfydd ferch Gruffudd
ap Adda". Harl. 1977, 211v extends her ancestry to "Adda ap Gruffudd Goch ap Rhys Goch" but this Rhys Goch is not known
to have had a son with that name. Bartrum suggests Gruffudd Goch was perhaps an error for Gweirydd ap Rhys Goch, but
he incorrectly attached Morfydd to "Gruffudd ap Adda ap Gruffudd ap Madog ap Cadifor ap Genillin ap Gwaethfoed of Meirionydd"
and dates her as two generations older than her father. But if we make Gruffudd Goch the son of Gweirydd ap Rhys Goch,
the chronology works while Bartrum's construction certainly doesn't
Arch. Cam. 1891, pp 259 says "Gwyn ap Iorwerth ap Rhiryd ap Iorwerth, and his
brother Robert, were living in 1313 when their names appear in deeds. The author of that passage, H.F.J. Vaughan, does
not provide a source for that statement, but the date is wholly consistent with this Gwyn
Dict. Welsh Biography, pp 1130 says "Madog ap Iorwerth ap Rhiryd, otherwise known
as Matthew de Englefield, was bishop of Bangor 1327-1357"
Pen 129, 96, 99 & 122 and Pen. 127, 37 & 182 cite "Gwenllian ferch
Iorwerth ap Rhiryd" married "Gruffudd Lloyd ap Llewelyn ap Ynyr". We would delete the "Lloyd" nickname; his brother,
Maredudd ap Llewelyn ap Ynyr, had a son called Gruffudd Lloyd and some sources apply the nickname to both men named Gruffudd.
This Gruffudd ap Llewelyn is named in the 1315 Extent of Bromfield and Yale as one of the holders of Gelligynan, Ial
Visitation of Shropshire, 1623, pp 385 shows "Katherine da. Iorwerth ap Rhiryd
descended from Ednowain Bendew" married "Iorwerth Fychan ap Iorwerth Foel ap Madog Fychan ap Madog ap Urien ap Eignian" descended
from Idnerth Benfras. The pedigree is quite flawed in its chronology; we think Iorwerth Foel, Madog and Urien were brothers
and sons of Eginyr ap Einion. Marriages cited for all 3 of those men date them to c. 1240/45
21. Einion ap Rhiryd ap Iorwerth, born c. 1240
His wife is unknown, but he had 2 sons:
30.
Madog ap Einion ap Rhiryd
31.
Maredudd ap Einion ap Rhiryd
See #9 above; both families had an "Einion ap Rhiryd ap Iorwerth ap Madog" and
the sources seldom differentiate one from the other. Cardiff 3.8, 91 cites "Einion ap Rhiryd ap Iorwerth" as the father of
Maredudd
22. Robert ap Iorwerth ap Rhiryd, born c. 1245
He married Ales (c. 1250) ferch Ithel Fychan
(c. 1220) ap Ithel Lloyd (c. 1190) ap Ithel Gam Hen (c. 1155) ap Maredudd (c. 1120) ap Uchdryd of Cyfeiliog (c. 1085) ap Uchdryd
(c. 1055) ap Edwin of Tegeingl (c. 1020) They had a daughter:
Tangwystl
ferch Robert ap Iorwerth, born c. 1280. She married Cynwrig (c. 1280) ap Ieuan (c. 1250) ap Gruffudd (c. 1220) descended
from Aldud ap Owain ap Edwin of Tegeingl
Pen. 127, 131 & 164; Pen. 128, 600b, 609a & 611a; Pen. 134, 365; and
Pen. 135, 261 cite "Robert ap Iorwerth ap Rhiryd" married "Ales ferch Ithel Fychan ap Ithel Lloyd ap Ithel Gam". Pen.
129, 112 extends her ancestry to "Ithel Lloyd ap Ithel Gam ap Maredudd", while Pen. 129, 115 gives "Hen Ithel Gam ap Maredudd
ap Uchdryd". All sources make this Uchdryd ap Edwin, but Harl. 1969 cites one wife of Uchdryd as "Angharad ferch Maredudd
ap Bleddyn, prince of Powys". That lady would occur c. 1100 and fits with Uchdryd the father of Maredudd, but he would
occur in the generation of grandsons of Edwin. We make him a same-named son of Uchdryd ap Edwin.
Pen. 129, 110; Pen. 127, 131 & Pen. 128, 610b cite "Tangwystl ferch Robert
ap Iorwerth" married "Cynwrig ap Ieuan ap Gruffudd". Both the family of Tangwystl and of her husband had same-named
men, so we have assigned the marriage to those who were contemporaries.
23. Rhiryd ap Iorwerth ap Rhiryd, born c. 1240
His wife is unknown, but he had 2 sons:
32.
Iorwerth ap Rhiryd ap Iorwerth
33.
Robert Goch ap Rhiryd ap Iorwerth
All sources for this line are deficient of generations, citing him as Rhiryd
ap Iorwerth ap Madog ap Ednowain Bendew. Our construction of Rhiryd ap [Iorwerth ap Rhiryd ap Madog] ap Iorwerth ap
Madog ap Ednowain Bendew is chronologically sound. However, there was a Rhiryd ap Iorwerth ap Madog ap Ednowain Bendew
(#6 above) born 100 years earlier
24. Madog ap Einion ap Rhiryd, born c. 1235
His wife is unknown, but he had 2 sons:
34.
Maredudd ap Madog ap Einion
35.
Llewelyn ap Madog ap Einion
See #16 above for the discussion of 4 separate men called Madog ap Einion ap
Rhiryd, all born in different generations; 3 of those men had sons called Llewelyn and 2 of them also had a son named
Maredudd.
This family was seated at Caerwys in Rhuddlan, Tegeingl and is primarily
confused with the family at Bodidris, Ial where an earlier Madog ap Einion ap Rhiryd also named sons Maredudd and Llewelyn.
25. Maredudd ap Llewelyn ap Madog, born c. 1245
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
36.
Madog ap Maredudd ap Llewelyn
The earliest of the two family branches who repeated a 9-generation string of
male names, this one was seated at Bachymbyd, Dyffryn Clwyd in the 14th century. See #17 above
GENERATION 7
26. Llewelyn ap Maredudd ap Madog, born c. 1265
His wife is unknown. He held half of Bodidris,
Ial in with his brother, Ieuaf. He had a son:
37.
Llewelyn ap Llewelyn ap Maredudd
Pen. 128, 211b; Pen. 134,301 & Pen. 135, 112 cite "Llewelyn ap Maredudd ap
Madog" as the father of Llewelyn
27. Ieuaf ap Maredudd ap Madog, born c. 1270
His wife is unknown. He held half of Bodidris,
Ial with his brother, Llewelyn. He had only a daughter:
Tangwystl
ferch Ieuaf ap Maredudd, born c. 1300
She
married Gruffudd Lloyd (c. 1290) ap Maredudd (c. 1255) ap Llewelyn (c. 1225) ap Ynyr (c. 1190) and carried her father's half
of Bodidris to her husband and son.
Pen. 129, 81 cites "Tangwystl ferch Ieuaf ap Maredudd ap Madog ap Einion ap Rhiryd
ap Iorwerth" married "Gruffudd Lloyd ap Llewelyn ap Ynyr", but mistakes him for the Gruffudd who was a son of Llewelyn and
uncle of Gruffudd Lloyd. Gruffudd Lloyd was the son of Maredudd ap Llewelyn ap Ynyr.
28. Robert ap Iorwerth ap Rhiryd, born c. 1275
His wife is unknown, but he had 3 sons and 3
daughters:
38.
Iorwerth ap Robert ap Iorwerth
Llewelyn ap Robert ap Iorwerth, born c. 1310. He had a daughter:
Marged ferch Llewelyn ap Robert, born c. 1340. She married Ieuan Gethyn (c. 1335) ap Madog Cyffin (c. 1300) descended
from Einion Efell ap Madog ap Maredudd ap Bleddyn ap Cynfyn.
Ithel ap Robert ap Iorwerth, born c. 1310. He was elected Bishop of Bangor in 1357 to succeed his uncle, Matthew ap
Iorwerth ap Rhiryd, but the election was quashed by the Pope. In 1375 he was appointed archdeacon at St Asaph and held
that office until 1382
Lleuci ferch Robert ap Iorwerth, born c. 1305. She married first, Robert (c. 1290) ap Gruffudd (c. 1260) ap Sir Hywel
y Fwyall (c. 1225) ap Gruffudd (c. 1195) ap Ednyfed Fychan (c. 1165). Ednyfed Fychan was seneschal to Llewelyn Fawr
ap Iorwerth, king of Gwynedd; through another son, Ednyfed Fychan was also the direct paternal ancestor of King Henry VII
of England. Secondly, Lleuci married Hywel Gymen (c. 1305) ap Llewelyn (c. 1275) ap Gruffudd Fychan (c. 1245) ap Gruffudd
(c. 1215) ap Iorwerth (c. 1185) ap Maredudd (c. 1150) ap Mathusalem (c. 1120) ap Hwfa ap Cynddelw.
Marged ferch Robert ap Iorwerth, born c. 1310, married Madog (c. 1305) ap Gronwy Fychan (c. 1270) ap Tudor Hen (c. 1235) ap
Gronwy (c. 1200) ap Ednyfed Fychan.
Angharad ferch Robert ap Iorwerth, born c. 1310. married Cynwrig (c. 1300) ap Bleddyn Llwyd (c. 1270) ap Bleddyn Fychan (c.
1240) ap Bleddyn (c. 1205) ap Rhiwallon (c. 1175) ap Radfarch (c. 1145) descended from Hedd ap Alunog.
Pen. 129, 52 cites "Llewelyn ap Robert ap Iorwerth ap Rhiryd" as father of
Marged
Pen 129, 52 & 122 and Pen 127, 150 cite "Marged ferch Llewelyn ap Robert" married "Ieuan
Gethyn ap Madog Cyffin ap Madog Goch", while Pen. 131, 103 & 138 extend his ancestry to "Madog Cyffin ap Madog Goch ap
Ieuaf ap Cuhelyn ap Rhun ap Einion Efell".
Dict of Welsh Biography, pp 1130 says "nothing is known of Ithel ap Robert ap Iorwerth ap
Rhiryd
before 1357, when the chapter of Bangor elected him bishop in succession to his uncle.
The pope, however, quashed that election". His appointment to St Asaph is also mentioned in this source.
Pen. 129, 112; Pen. 127, 126; and Pen. 128, 610a cite "Lleuci ferch Robert ap Iorwerth" married
Robert ap Gruffudd ap Hywel", while Pen. 131, 103 extends his ancestry to "Gruffudd ap Hywel ap Gruffudd ap Ednyfed Fychan
Pen. 131, 101; Pen. 129, 119 & 126; and Pen. 128, 610a cite "Lleuci ferch Robert ap Iorwerth"
married "Hywel Gymen ap Llewelyn ap Gruffudd", while Dwnn ii, 252 cites him as "Hywel Gymen ap Llewelyn ap Gruffudd Fychan
ap Gruffudd ap Iorwerth ap Maredudd ap Mathusalem". Pen. 131, 100; Pen. 129, 63; Pen. 127, 28 cite "Maredudd ap Mathusalem
ap Hwfa ap Cynddelw".
Pen. 129, 62 & 116; Pen. 127, 149; and Pen. 135, 378 cite "Marged ferch Robert ap Iorwerth"
married "Madog ap Gronwy Fychan ap Gronwy ap Ednyfed Fychan". These sources omit the father of Gronwy Fychan, but Madog's
brother Tudor is always cited as "Tudor ap Gronwy ap Tudor ap Gronwy ap Ednyfed Fychan. To distinguish these men from
each other, some call the earliest Tudor "Hen" and the second Gronwy "Fychan". Bartrum's chart for that family shows
a generation missing between Gronwy and Gronwy Fychan.
Pen 128, 610a cites "Angharad ferch Robert ap Iorwerth" married "Cynwrig ap Bleddyn Llwyd
ap Bleddyn Fychan". The 1334 Survey of Denbigh shows Cynwrig ap Bleddyn Llwyd as an adult owning lands as a direct descendant
of Rhiwallon ap Radfarch.
29. Ieuan ap Iorwerth ap Rhiryd, born c. 1280
His wife is unknown, but he had a daughter:
Nest
ferch Ieuan ap Iorwerth, born c. 1310. She married Dafydd (c. 1295) ap Iorwerth (c. 1265) ap Tudor (c. 1235) ap Gronwy
(c. 1205) ap Meurig (c. 1175) ap Cyfnerth Fychan (c. 1145) ap Cyfnerth (c. 1115) ap Morgeneu (c. 1080) ap Gwrydyr (c. 1045)
descended from Cilmin Droed Ddu. Cilmin was the son of Cadrod ap Gwriad, brother to Merfyn Frych who usurped rule
in Gwynedd c. 816/825 and was father to Rhodri Mawr.
Pen. 129, 143 cites "Nest ferch Ieuan ap Iorwerth ap Rhiryd" married "Dafydd
ap Iorwerth ap Tudor ap Gronwy", while Pen. 129, 141 extends his ancestry to "Tudor ap Gronwy ap Meurig ap Cyfnerth Fychan".
HLG 8a carries the ancestry of Cyfnerth Fychan back to Cilmin
30. Madog ap Einion ap Rhiryd, born c. 1270.
His wife is unknown, but he had 4 sons:
39.
Hywel ap Madog ap Einion
40.
Gruffudd ap Madog ap Einion
41.
Cwnws ap Madog ap Einion
42.

Pen. 177, 309 & Pen. 176, 94 cite "Madog ap Einion" as father of Hywel
Pen. 134, 445 & Pen. 135, 340 cite "Madog ap Einion" as father of Cwnws
Pen. 177, 296 % Pen. 134, 257 cite "Madog ap Einion" as father of Madog Wyddel
Pen. 134, 138 cites "Gruffudd ap Madog" which Bartrum would emend to
"Gruffudd ap Madog ap Einion" but none of the sources cited for the sons of Madog ap Einion extend the ancestry beyond Einion.
31. Maredudd ap Einion ap Rhiryd, born c. 1270
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
43.
Ednyfed ap Maredudd ap Einion
Cardiff 3.8, 91 cites "Ednyfed ap Maredudd ap Einion ap Rhiryd"
32. Iorwerth ap Rhiryd ap Iorwerth, born c. 1275
He married Nest (c. 1280) ferch Iorwerth
(c. 1245) ap Gronwy (c. 1210) ap Einion (c. 1175) ap Seisyllt (c. 1145) ap Einion (c. 1110) ap Seisyllt of Meirionydd
(c. 1080). They had a son:
44.
Robert ap Iorwerth ap Rhiryd
Pen. 127, 34 & 127; Pen. 138, 538; and Pen. 135,261 cite "Iorwerth ap Rhiryd
ap Iorwerth" married "Nest ferch Iorwerth ap Gronwy". Pen. 127, 34 extends her ancestry to "Iorwerth ap Gronwy ap Einion
ap Seisyllt". Not realizing that this Einion was a grandson of the first Einion ap Seisyllt, many genealogists
date a single Einion ap Seisyllt 2 generations too late.
33. Robert Goch ap Rhiryd ap Iorwerth, born
c. 1280
He married Lleuci (c. 1295) ferch Dafydd Fychan
(c. 1265) ap Dafydd (c. 1235) ap Einion Fychan (c. 1200) ap Einion Ddu (c. 1170) ap Cynwrig (c. 1135). Einion Ddu was

Iorwerth Sais ap Robert Goch ap Rhiryd
Angharad ferch Robert Goch ap Rhiryd, born c. 1315. She married Ednyfed (c. 1305) ap Einion ap Ithel ap Adda ap Aldrud.
That family is unknown and is datable only by this marriage. Some mistake Aldrud for Aldud ap Owain but those men were
born at least 90 years apart.
Pen. 129, 79; Pen. 127, 115 & Pen. 128, 169b cite "Robert Goch ap Rhiryd
ap Iorwerth" as father of Bleddyn
Pen. 131, 48 and Pen. 134, 208 cite "Robert Goch ap Rhiryd ap Iorwerth" as father
of Iorwerth Sais
Pen. 127, 62/63 and Pen. 128, 274a cite "Angharad ferch Robert Goch ap Rhiryd"
married "Ednyfed ap Einion ap Ithel ap Adda ap Aldrud"
34. Maredudd ap Madog ap Einion, born c. 1265
His wife is unknown but he had 2 sons:
47. Rhys ap
Maredudd ap Madog
48. Ieuan
ap Maredudd ap Madog
Pen. 128, 597a & 643a cited "Maredudd ap Madog" as father of Rhys
Visitation of Shropshire, pp 211 shows "Maredudd ap Madog ap Einion" as father
of Ieuan
Bartrum confuses this Maredudd with the same-named man of Bodidris, Ial but this
one lived at Caerwys in Rhuddlan, Tegeingl
35. Llewelyn ap Madog ap Einion, born c. 1270
His wife is unknown, but he had a son and a daughter:
49.
Maredudd ap Llewelyn ap Madog
Gwladys ferch Llewelyn ap Madog, born c. 1305. She married Ednyfed (c. 1305) ap Iorwerth Foel (c. 1270) ap Iorwerth
Fychan (c. 1240) ap Iorwerth Hen (c. 1210) ap Owain (c. 1180) ap Bleddyn (c. 1150) ap Tudor (c. 1120) ap Bleddyn (c.
1085) ap Tudor (c. 1055) ap Rhys Sais (c. 1025) descended from Tudor Trevor. This may have been a second marriage for
both.
Pen. 287, 225 cites Maredudd as a son of Llewelyn ap Madog.
Pen. 131, 138 and Pen. 129, 90 cite "Gwladys ferch Llewelyn ap Madog ap Einion"
married "Ednyfed Gam ap Iorwerth Foel ap Iorwerth Fychan".
36. Madog ap Maredudd ap Llewelyn, born c. 1275
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
50.

GENERATION 8
37. Llewelyn ap Llewelyn ap Maredudd, born c. 1295
He lived at Bodidris, Ial in 1315 and shared it
with Gruffudd Lloyd ap Maredudd ap Llewelyn ap Ynyr. That man had married Llewelyn's first-cousin, Tangwystl ferch Ieuaf
ap Maredudd (#27 above) the heiress of half of Bodidris. The wife of Llewelyn is not known, but he had an only daughter:
Lleuci ferch Llewelyn
ap Llewelyn ap Maredudd, born c. 1330. She married Llewelyn (c. 1320) ap Gruffudd Lloyd (c. 1290) (the Gruffudd Lloyd mentioned
immediately above) and thus united Bodidris with her husband and their son.
Pen. 128, 211b; Pen. 134, 301 & Pen. 135, 112 cite "Lleuci ferch Llewelyn
ap Llewelyn" married "Llewelyn ap Gruffudd Lloyd". Her descent stops there, but there is little doubt it was the Gruffudd
Lloyd who'd shared Bodidris with her father.
Ext of Bromfield and Yale of 1315, pp 89 lists the owners of Bodidris as "Gruffudd
Lloyd" and "Llewelyn ap Llewelyn ap Maredudd"
38. Iorwerth ap Robert ap Iorwerth, born c. 1305
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:

Pen. 287, 227 cites "Hywel ap Madog" as the father of Dafydd Trevor
40. Gruffudd ap Madog ap Einion, born c. 1300
He lived in Llanfair, Dyffryn Clwyd; his wife
is unknown, but he had a son:
54. Madog
ap Gruffudd ap Madog
Pen. 134, 138 and Cardiff 2.265, 299 & 359 cite "Gruffudd ap Madog"
as father of Madog, but carry the ancestry no further. Bartrum presents him alongside Gruffudd ap Madog of Bachymbyd
on chart Ednywain Bendew 10 but attaches him nowhere. In fact the two men named Gruffudd ap Madog (see #50) were
near the same age and might easily be confused. On his chart, Bartrum has incorrectly appended Gruffudd ap Madog of Bachymbyd
to Madog ap Einion (#30 above)
41. Cwnws ap Madog ap Einion, born c. 1305
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:

(c. 1120) ap Uchdryd (c. 1085). They had a son:
60.

Pen. 131, 131; Pen. 129, 80 and Pen. 127, 115 cite "Bleddyn ap Robert Goch ap

Sais ap Robert Goch" married "Hywel ap Meurig Fychan ap Ynyr Fychan" while Pen. 131, 95 & 98 extend the ancestry of this
Meurig Fychan back to Cadwgan of Nannau. Other sources drop the "Fychan" from Meurig ap Ynyr Fychan, a preferred construction
47. Rhys ap Maredudd ap Madog, born c. 1295
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
62.
Ithel ap Rhys ap Maredudd
Pen. 128, 643b cites "Rhys ap Maredudd ap Madog" as father of Ithel

66.
Madog ap Gruffudd ap Madog
Pen. 287, 229 cites "Gruffudd ap Madog" as father
of Madog and also cites a "Madog ap Gruffudd Fychan". Bartrum equates Gruffudd ap Madog with Gruffudd Fychan ap Madog
which, when reviewing the subsequent families, fails chronologically. Both Gruffudd ap Madog and Gruffudd Fychan ap
Gruffudd ap Madog had sons named Madog, and each of those sons had a son named Ieuan ap Madog but these same-named men
were born a full generation apart.
GENERATION 9

ferch Gruffudd Fychan (c. 1320) ap Gruffudd (c. 1290) ap Dafydd Goch (c. 1260) ap Dafydd (c. 1230) ap Gruffudd (c. 1200) ap
Llewelyn (c. 1170) ap Iorwerth of Penmachno (c. 1135) ap Nefydd Hardd (c. 1105). Nefydd Hardd was lord
of Nant Conwy and descended from Heilig ap Glannog. By this wife, Cynwrig had a son:
73.
Rhys ap Cynwrig ap Robert
Secondly, Cynwrig ap Robert married
Angharad (c. 1340) ferch Madog Lloyd (c. 1300) ap Iorwerth Foel (c. 1270). The ancestry of Iorwerth Foel is given
under #35 above. By this marriage, Cynwrig ap Robert had 3 sons:
74.
Ithel Fychan ap Cynwrig ap Robert

ap Cynwrig ap Robert

back to Dafydd ap Gruffudd ap Llewelyn
Pen. 128, 146a cites "Cynwrig ap Robert ap Iorwerth" as father of Rhys
Pen. 129, 111 & 114 and Pen. 127, 127 & 133 cite "Cynwrig ap Robert
ap Iorwerth" married "Angharad ferch Madog Lloyd ap Iorwerth Foel"
59. Llewelyn ap Robert ap Iorwerth, born c. 1345
He married a daughter of Dafydd ap Madog
Lloyd whose ancestry is uncertain. If this was Madog Lloyd ap Iorwerth Foel of Chirk (who is not known to have a son
named Dafydd), the lady would occur c. 1360. Llewelyn ap Robert had a daughter:
Marged ferch
Llewelyn ap Robert, born c. 1375. She married Llewelyn (c. 1365) ap Gruffudd y Person (c. 1330) ap Hwfa (c. 1290)
ap Iorwerth (c. 1260) ap Griffri (c. 1230) ap Ieuaf (c. 1195) ap Nynnio (c. 1160) ap Cynwrig (1125) ap
Rhiwallon (1095) ap Cynwrig (1065) ap Rhiwallon (1030) descended from Tudor Trevor.
Pen. 129, 122 cites "Llewelyn ap Robert ap Iorwerth"
Pen. 139(2), 181 cites "a daughter of Dafydd ap Madog Lloyd married Llewelyn
ap Robert ap Iorwerth
Pen. 128, 176a cites "Marged ferch Llewelyn ap Robert" married "Llewelyn

Einion (c. 1140) ap Caradog (c. 1110) ap Gwgan (c. 1075) ap Merwydd Goch (c. 1040) ap Collwyn (c. 1010) ap Tangno.
They had 2 sons and a daughter:
77.
Iorwerth ap Robert ap Bleddyn
78.

Sioned ferch Robert ap Bleddyn, born c. 1375. She married Gruffudd (c. 1370) ap Dafydd (c. 1335) ap Llewelyn (c. 1290)
ap Dafydd Hen (c. 1250) ap Gronwy (c. 1215) descended from Sandde Hardd of Mortyn
Pen. 129, 79/80; Pen. 127, 115; and Pen. 128, 169b cite "Robert ap Bleddyn
ap Robert Goch ap Rhiryd" married "Marged ferch Ieuan ap Gruffudd". Pen. 129, 80 extends her ancestry to "Ieuan ap Gruffudd
ap Hywel ap Maredudd ap Einion ap Gwgan ap Merwydd Goch ap Collwyn", but two additional generations are required
to date her as late as 1355. We believe another pair of "Gruffudd ap Hywel" should immediately follow the one cited;
the same two generations are missing in the timeline for Sir Hywel y Fwyall, a brother of Ieuan ap Gruffudd.
Pen. 129, 79 and Pen. 127, 115 cite "Sioned ferch Robert ap Bleddyn ap
Robert Goch" married "Gruffudd ap Dafydd ap Llewelyn ap Dafydd ap Gronwy"
61. Tudor ap Iorwerth Sais ap Robert Goch, born c. 1345
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
79.
Gronwy ap Tudor ap Iorwerth Sais
Pen. 131, 48 and Pen. 134, 208 cite "Tudor ap Iorwerth Sais ap Robert Goch"
as father of Gronwy
62. Ithel ap Rhys ap Maredudd, born c.
1325
He married Nest ferch Ieuan ap Llewelyn
ap Ednyfed, whose ancestry is uncertain. We suspect this may have been Llewelyn ap Ednyfed Foel ap Gwyn ap Ednowain
ap Cynwrig ap Hoedliw of Cristionydd in Maelor; if so, Nest would occur c. 1335. They had a son and 2 daughters:
80. Tudor ap Ithel ap Rhys
Ales ferch Ithel ap Rhys, born c. 1355. She married Dafydd (c. 1345) ap Iorwerth Fychan (c. 1310) ap Iorwerth (c. 1280)
ap Bleddyn (c. 1250) ap Gruffudd (c. 1220) ap Dafydd (c. 1185) ap Gronwy (c. 1150) ap Maredudd (c. 1120) ap Uchdryd (c. 1085)
Gwenhwyfar ferch Ithel ap Rhys, born c. 1360. She married Maredudd (c. 1345) ap Dafydd (c. 1310) ap Maredudd Goch
of Ardudwy (c. 1275) ap Ednyfed (c. 1240) ap Maredudd (c. 1205) ap Adda (c. 1175) ap Iorwerth Goch (c. 1140) ap Tyfid (c.
1110) ap Asser (c. 1075) ap Merwydd Goch (c. 1040) ap Collwyn (c. 1010) ap Tangno.
Pen. 128, 643b cites "Ithel ap Rhys ap Maredudd ap Madog" married "Nest
ferch Ieuan ap Llewelyn ap Ednyfed"
Pen. 128, 643a cites "Ales ferch Ithel ap Rhys ap Maredudd" married "Dafydd
ap Iorwerth Fychan ap Iorwerth ap Bleddyn ap Gruffudd ap Dafydd ap Gronwy ap Maredudd" while Pen. 134, 314 extends his ancestry
to "Dafydd ap Gronwy ap Maredudd ap Uchdryd"
Pen. 128, 643b cites "Gwenhwyfar ferch Ithel ap Rhys ap Maredudd ap Madog"
married "Maredudd ap Dafydd ap Maredudd Goch ap Ednyfed" while Harl. 1977, 129 continues "Maredudd Goch ap Ednyfed ap Maredudd
ap Adda ap Iorwerth Goch ap Tyfid ap Asser". While it makes Asser's father a man called Seisyllt, the timeline suggests
the Asser in this pedigree was the son of Merwydd Goch.
63. Ithel ap Ieuan ap Maredudd, born c. 1330
His wife is unknown, but he had a daughter:
Tangwystl ferch Ithel ap Ieuan, born c. 1360. She married Dafydd (c. 1360) ap Llewelyn (c. 1320) ap Gruffudd Lloyd (c.
1290) ap Maredudd (c. 1255) ap Llewelyn of Ial (c. 1225) ap Ynyr (c. 1190) descended from Sandde Hardd of Mortyn. She
was his second wife and it is likely this was not her first marriage.
Vis. of Shropshire-1623, pp 211 cites "Tangwystl ferch Ithel ap Ieuan ap
Maredudd ap Madog ap Einion ap Rhiryd" married "Dafydd ap Llewelyn ap Gruffudd Lloyd". This source mistakes Einion ap
Rhiryd with #9 above. It also errs by making Gruffudd Lloyd the son of Llewelyn ap Ynyr. See comments at #20 and
#27 above
64. Madog ap Maredudd ap Llewelyn, born c. 1330
His wife is unknown, but he had 2 sons:
81. Dafydd ap Madog ap Maredudd
82. Gruffudd ap Madog ap Maredudd
Pen. 287, 225/229 cites "Madog ap Maredudd ap Llewelyn ap Madog" as father
of Dafydd
Pen. 127, 183 and Pen. 128, 254b cite a Madog as father of Gruffudd
but do not name Madog's father. See additional comments under #82 below
65. Gruffudd Fychan ap Gruffudd ap Madog, born c. 1340
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
83. Madog ap Gruffudd Fychan ap Gruffudd
Pen. 287, 229 cites a "Madog ap Gruffudd Fychan" and continues "Gruffudd
ap Madog ap Maredudd ap Llewelyn" without clearly saying that Gruffudd Fychan was the son of the following Gruffudd.
Bartrum assumed Gruffudd Fychan and Gruffudd were the same man, but the chronology requires both generations.
66. Madog ap Gruffudd ap Madog, born c. 1345
He married a daughter (c. 1360) of
Ieuan (c. 1330) ap Dafydd Fychan (c. 1300) ap Dafydd (c. 1270) ap Iorwerth (c. 1240) ap Dafydd (c. 1205) ap Cowryd (c. 1175)
ap Cadfan (c. 1140). They had a son and a daughter:
84. Ieuan ap Madog ap Gruffudd
Angharad ferch Madog ap Gruffudd, born c. 1375. She married Tudor (c. 1365) ap Iorwerth Sais (c. 1335) ap Iorwerth (c.
1305) ap Llewelyn (c. 1270) ap Iorwerth (c. 1235) ap Heilyn (c. 1205) ap Cowryd (c. 1175) ap Cadfan (c. 1140).
Cardiff 4.265, 359v cites "Madog ap Gruffudd ap Madog" married "a daughter
of Ieuan ap Dafydd Fychan", while Harleian Ms 2299 extends her ancestry to "Dafydd Fychan ap Dafydd ap Iorwerth ap Dafydd
ap Cowryd ap Cadfan".
Pen. 287, 229 cites "Angharad ferch Madog ap Gruffudd ap Madog" married
"Tudor ap Iorwerth Sais ap Iorwerth", while Pen. 129, 84 extends his ancestry to "Iorwerth Sais ap Iorwerth ap Llewelyn ap
Iorwerth ap Heilyn ap Cowryd ap Cadfan"
GENERATION 10:
67. Jenkin ap Dafydd ap Iorwerth, born c. 1375
He married Nest (1390) ferch Gronwy
(1360) ap Gwyn (1330) ap Gronwy Sais (1300) descended from Maredudd ap Ednowain Bendew. Jenkin
and Nest had a son:
85. Ithel
ap Jenkin ap Dafydd
Pen. 287, 278 cites "Jenkin ap Dafydd" married "Nest ferch Gronwy ap Gwyn ap
Gronwy Sais"
Dwnn ii, 300 cites "Jenkin ap Dafydd ap Iorwerth ap Robert" as father of Ithel
68. Madog ap Cynwrig ap Hywel, born c. 1360
He married Angharad ferch Ieuan ap Ithel, whose
pedigree is incomplete but said to have descended from Uchdryd ap Edwin. We suspect the correct pedigree is "Ieuan ap
Ithel ap Ithel Fychan ap Ithel Gam ap Ithel Lloyd ap Ithel Gam Hen ap Maredudd ap Uchdryd; if so, Angharad was born c. 1360.
They had 3 sons and a daughter:
Hywel ap Madog ap Cynwrig, born c. 1395. He married Ales (c. 1405) ferch Gruffudd Goch (c. 1360) ap Ieuan (c. 1330)
ap Dafydd Fychan (c. 1300) descended from Cowryd ap Cadfan. See #66 above for the intervening generations.
Llewelyn ap Madog ap Cynwrig, born c. 1390
Thomas Lloyd ap Madog ap Cynwrig, born c. 1395
Gwenllian ferch Madog ap Cynwrig, born c. 1400. She married Dafydd (c. 1400) ap Llewelyn (c. 1370) ap Dafydd (c. 1340)
ap Llewelyn (c. 1310) ap Owain Hen (c. 1280) ap Gruffudd (c. 1245) ap Owain (c. 1205) ap Bleddyn (c. 1171) ap Owain Brogyntyn
(c. 1140). Owain Brogyntyn was a base son of Madog ap Maredudd ap Bleddyn ap Cynfyn.
Pen. 176, 33 cites "Madog ap Cynwrig ap Hywel" married "Angharad ferch Ieuan
ap Ithel" The remainder of her ancestry is cited many ways, all unsatisfactory. Harleian Ms 1969 suggests it included
"Ithel Fychan ap Ithel Lloyd descended from Maredudd ap Uchdryd". Our construction, while only a guess, is chronologically
satisfactory.
Pen. 128, 179a and Pen. 176, 24 cite "Hywel ap Madog ap Cynwrig" married "Ales
ferch Gruffudd Goch ap Ieuan" while Pen. 129, 131 extends her ancestry to "Gruffudd Goch ap Ieuan ap Dafydd Fychan"
Pen. 177, 309 cites "Llewelyn ap Madog ap Cynwrig ap Hywel ap Madog"
Harleian 1969, 205 cites "Thomas Lloyd ap Madog ap Cynwrig"
Pen. 176, 32 & 37 cite "Gwenllian ferch Madog ap Cynwrig ap Hywel" married
"Dafydd ap Llewelyn ap Owain Hen" while Pen. 129,57 extends his ancestry to "Dafydd ap Llewelyn ap Owain Hen ap Gruffudd ap
Owain" and Pen. 131, 103 extends that to "Gruffudd ap Owain ap Bleddyn ap Owain Brogyntyn"
69. Cynwrig ap Madog ap Gruffudd, born c. 1360
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
86.
Jenkin Goch ap Cynwrig ap Madog
Pen. 176, 58 and Pen. 177, 150 cite "Cynwrig ap Madog ap Gruffudd ap Madog" as
father of Jenkin Goch
70. Dafydd ap Maredudd ap Cwnws, born c. 1370
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
Ithel
ap Dafydd ap Maredudd, born c. 1400
Pen. 287, 229 cites the father of Ithel as "Dafydd ap Maredudd", while Pen. 134,
445 extends that to "Maredudd ap Cwnws ap Madog"
71. Dafydd ap Madog Fychan ap Madog Wyddel, born c. 1365
He married Marged (c. 1370) ferch Cynwrig (c.
1335) ap Bleddyn Lloyd (c. 1300) ap Bleddyn Fychan (c. 1270) descended from Hedd ap Alunog. They had 2 sons and 2 daughters:
87. Llewelyn
ap Dafydd ap Madog Fychan
Gruffudd ap Dafydd ap Madog Fychan, born c. 1395 and had a son:
Ithel
ap Gruffudd ap Dafydd, born c. 1425. He was the great-great grandfather of Dr David Powell, the author of the first
History of Wales
Gwen
ferch Dafydd ap Madog Fychan, born c. 1395. She married first, Belyn (c. 1380) ap Cadwgan Decca (c. 1345) ap Iorwerth
(c. 1315) ap Cadwgan Ddu (c. 1280) ap Cadwgan Goch (c. 1250) ap y Gwion (c. 1220) ap Hwfa (c. 1190) ap Cadwgan Goch (c. 1160)
ap y Gwion (c. 1125) ap Hwfa (c. 1095) ap Ithel Felyn (c. 1065) ap Llewelyn Fychan (c. 1035) ap Llewelyn Aurdorchog, Lord
of Ial (c. 1005). Gwen married secondly, Ieuan (c. 1395) ap Tudor (c. 1365) ap Gruffudd Lloyd (c. 1335) ap Heilyn Frych
(c. 1305) ap Cynwrig Fychan (c. 1275) ap Cynwrig (c. 1245) ap Llywarch (c. 1210) ap Heilyn Gloff (c. 1175) descended from
Marchweithian of Is Aled in Rhufoniog.
Efa ferch Dafydd ap Madog Fychan, born c. 1400. She married Ieuan Lloyd ap Llewelyn Goch ap Ieuaf Goch descended from
Rhiryd of Dinmael. We have done no work on that family, but Bartrum dates Ieuan Lloyd to c. 1400.
Pen. 129, 88b; Pen. 131, 148 and Pen. 128, 617b cite "Dafydd ap Madog Fychan
ap Madog Wyddel" married "Marged ferch Cynwrig Fychan ap Cynwrig ap Bleddyn Lloyd", while Pen. 131, 57 extends her ancestry
to "Bleddyn Lloyd ap Bleddyn Fychan ap Bleddyn"
Pen. 177, 236 and Pen. 134, 257 cite "Dafydd ap Madog Fychan" as father of Llewelyn
Pen. 129, 88b and Pen. 138, 154 cite "Ithel ap Gruffudd ap Dafydd ap Madog Fychan".
Dr David Powell, born 1552, was the son of Hywel ap Dafydd ap Gruffudd ap Ithel
Pen. 129, 88b and Pen. 128, 617b cite "Gwen ferch Dafydd ap Madog Fychan" married
"Belyn ap Cadwgan Decca ap Iorwerth" while Pen. 135, 48 extends his ancestry to "Cadwgan Decca ap Iorwerth ap Cadwgan Ddu
ap Cadwgan Goch ap Gwion ap Hwfa ap Ithel Felyn". By his own estimates, Bartrum's chart of this family has 3 missing
generations; our work finds that the name-string "Cadwgan Goch ap Gwion ap Hwfa" occurs twice in succession before reaching
Ithel Felyn.
Dwnn ii, 332 cites "Gwenllian ferch Dafydd ap Madog Fychan" married "Ieuan ap
Tudor ap Gruffudd Lloyd ap Heilyn Frych" and extends this ancestry back to Marchweithian
Pen. 129, 88b and Pen. 128, 617b cite "Efa ferch Dafydd ap Madog Fychan ap Madog
Wyddel" married "Ieuan Lloyd ap Llewelyn Goch ap Ieuaf Goch"
72. Gronwy ap Madog Goch ap Ednyfed, born c. 1370
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
Iorwerth
Fychan ap Gronwy ap Madog Goch, born c. 1400. He married Marged (c. 1405) ferch Iorwerth (c. 1370) ap Robert (c. 1340)
ap Bleddyn (c. 1310). See #77 below.
Cardiff 3.8, 91 cites "Iorwerth Fychan ap Gronwy ap Madog Goch" married "Marged
ferch Iorwerth ap Robert ap Bleddyn"
73. Rhys ap Cynwrig ap Robert, born c. 1370
He married first, Gwenllian (c. 1380) ferch Ednyfed
(c. 1345) ap Gruffudd (c. 1315) ap Iorwerth (c. 1285) ap Einion Goch (c. 1255) ap Einion (c. 1225) ap Ieuaf (c. 1195) ap Nynnio
(c. 1160) descended from Tudor Trevor. Rhys and Gwenllian divorced c. 1405 but had a daughter:
Lleuci
ferch Rhys ap Cynwrig, born c. 1400. She married Hywel (c. 1390) ap Maredudd (c. 1360) ap Hywel Fychan (c. 1330) ap
Hywel (c. 1300) ap Madog Goch (c. 1270) ap Iorwerth (c. 1235) ap Gwrgunon (c. 1200) ap Cyfnerth (c. 1170) ap Rhufon (c. 1140)
ap Nefydd Hardd of Nant Conwy (c. 1105).
Rhys ap Cynwrig married secondly, Myfanwy (c. 1375) ferch Ednyfed (c. 1345) ap
Tudor (c. 1300) ap Gronwy (c. 1270) ap Tudor Hen (c. 1235) ap Gronwy (c. 1200) ap Ednyfed Fychan (c. 1165). Rhys joined
the Owain Glendwr revolt and died between 1406 and 1420. Myfanwy remarried before 1420 and had no issue with Rhys.
Pen. 128, 146a & 601a and Pen. 176, 317 cite "Rhys ap Cynwrig ap Robert"
married "Gwenllian ferch Ednyfed ap Gruffudd", while Pen. 131, 45; Pen. 129, 81 and Pen. 127, 36 extend her ancestry to "Ednyfed
ap Gruffudd ap Iorwerth ap Einion Goch ap Einion". Pen. 128, 617b extends that to "Einion ap Ieuaf' but incorrectly
inserts "ap Llywarch ap Ieuaf" before reaching "ap Nynnio"
Pen. 128, 146a and Pen. 176, 317 cite "Lleuci ferch Rhys ap Cynwrig ap Robert"
married "Hywel ap Maredudd ap Hywel Fychan, while Pen. 177, 277 extends his ancestry to "Hywel Fychan ap Hywel ap Madog Goch"
and Pen. 177, 157 extends that to "Madog Goch ap Iorwerth ap Gwrgunon ap Cyfnerth ap Rhufon ap Nefydd Hardd"
Bulletin of the Board of Celtic Studies, vol 15, pp 59 lists persons who submitted
to the king in 1406 following the Owain Glendwr revolt; it included Rhys ap Cynwrig ap Robert and his wife, Myfanwy ferch
Ednyfed ap Tudor ap Gronwy". Pen. 131, 60 & 291; Pen. 129, 58; and Pen. 127, 22 extend her ancestry to "Tudor ap
Gronwy ap Tudor ap Gronwy ap Ednyfed Fychan"
Pen. 129, 112; Pen. 127, 126; and Pen. 128, 601a cite the second marriage of
"Gwenllian ferch Ednyfed ap Gruffudd" to "Rhys Wynn ap Dafydd ap Ithel", a man near her own age.
Pen. 128, 819a cites the second marriage of "Myfanwy ferch Ednyfed ap Tudor"
to "Maredudd ap Adda Moel ap Gwilym" while NLW document Chirk Castle F.908 dated 1420 lists Myfanwy as the wife of Maredudd
on that date
74. Ithel Fychan ap Cynwrig ap Robert, born c. 1370
He married Angharad (c. 1380) ferch Robin (c.
1340) ap Hywel (c. 1300) ap Dafydd (c. 1265) ap Dafydd (c. 1235) ap Gruffudd (c. 1200) ap Caradog (c. 1170) ap Thomas (c.
1135). No citations name the father of this Thomas, but we suspect he may have been the son of Henry ap Cadwgan
ap Bleddyn. They had 2 sons and a daughter:
88.
Cynwrig ap Ithel Fychan ap Cynwrig
89.
Dafydd ap Ithel Fychan ap Cynwrig
Marged ferch Ithel Fychan ap Cynwrig, born c. 1400. She married Ieuan (c. 1390) ap Rhys Gethyn (c. 1355) ap Gruffudd
Fychan (c. 1320) ap Gruffudd (c. 1290) ap Dafydd Goch (c. 1260) ap Dafydd (c. 1230) ap Gruffudd (c. 1200) ap Llewelyn (c.
1170) ap Iorwerth (c. 1135) ap Nefydd Hardd (c. 1105)
Bartrum's charts also incorrectly attach these two ladies as daughters of Ithel Fychan ap Cynwrig:
Daughter, born c. 1370, married Einion (c. 1360) ap Sir Hywel y Fwyall (c. 1325) ap Gruffudd (c. 1300) ap Hywel (c. 1270)
descended from Collwyn ap Tangno. Hywel of the battleaxe was knighted at Crecy in 1346 and fought at Poitiers in 1356.
See #60 above and its notes for the remainder of his pedigree.
Angharad, born c. 1450, married Ithel Wynn (c. 1445) ap Nicholas (c. 1415) ap Gwyn (c. 1385) ap Gruffudd (c. 1355) descended
from Ithel Talfrith of Ystrad Alun.
While those ladies may have had a father named Ithel Fychan ap Cynwrig, they cannot be sisters of Marged nor of each other.
Pen. 129, 111 & 114; Pen. 127, 133; and Pen. 128, 601b cite "Ithel Fychan
ap Cynwrig ap Robert" married "Angharad ferch Robin ap Hywel ap Dafydd" while Pen. 131, 68 extends her ancestry to "Hywel
ap Dafydd ap Gruffudd ap Caradog" We believe the Hywel in this pedigree was the son of Dafydd ap Dafydd ap Gruffudd
ap Caradog ap Thomas.
Pen. 129, 111; Pen. 127, 133; and Pen. 128, 612b cite "Marged ferch Ithel Fychan
ap Cynwrig" married "Ieuan ap Rhys Gethyn ap Gruffudd Fychan", while Pen. 131, 59 and Pen. 127, 17 extend his ancestry to
"Rhys Gethyn ap Gruffudd Fychan ap Gruffudd ap Dafydd Goch ap Dafydd ap Gruffudd ap Llewelyn ap Iorwerth". Pen. 287,
677 cites "Iorwerth ap Nefydd Hardd". Most sources mistake the Dafydd ap Gruffudd in this family for the brother
of Llewelyn the Last due to the similar names of his ancestors.
Pen. 134, 138 cites "a daughter of Ithel Fychan ap Cynwrig" married "Einion ap
Hywel y Fwyall ap Gruffudd" but extends neither line back any further. See #60 above for the pedigree of Ieuan ap Gruffudd,
a brother of Hywel y Fwyall.
Pen 287, 279 cites "Angharad ferch Ithel Fychan ap Cynwrig" married "Ithel Wynn
ap Nicholas ap Gruffudd" but extends neither line beyond that. It is assumed the source meant "Ithel Wynn ap Nicholas
ap Gwyn ap Gruffudd" or else the family is wholly unknown.
The fact that both these ladies appear in single manuscripts of the 17th century
does not enhance their credibility
75. Robert ap Cynwrig ap Robert, born c. 1375
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
90.
Cynwrig ap Robert ap Cynwrig
Pen. 287, 287 cites a lady called "Angharad ap Cynwrig ap Robert" whose marriage
dates her to c. 1440. While Bartrum would make her a daughter of Cynwrig ap Robert ap Iorwerth (#58 above), we suggest
she was a great-granddaughter of that man, requiring a Cynwrig ap Robert ap Cynwrig ap Robert.
76. Dafydd ap Cynwrig ap Robert, born c. 1370
He married Nest (c. 1380) ferch Meurig Lloyd
(c. 1345) ap Meurig Fychan (c. 1315) ap Ynyr Fychan (c. 1285) descended from Cadwgan of Nannau. They had a son
and a daughter:
Ithel ap Dafydd
ap Cynwrig, born c. 1400, had a son:
Dafydd Fychan ap Ithel ap Dafydd, born c. 1430. He married Marsli (c. 1440) daughter of Edmund Stanley (c. 1415) son
of Sir William Stanley IV (1389) son of Edmund Stanley (1360) son of Sir William Stanley III (1335)
Mallt ferch
Dafydd ap Cynwrig, born c. 1400. She married Bato (c. 1385) ap Madog (c. 1355) ap Gruffudd (c. 1325) ap Madog (c. 1295)
ap Iorwerth (c. 1265) ap Ieuaf (c. 1230) ap Iorwerth (c. 1200) ap Einion (c. 1170) ap Ithel (c. 1135) ap Eunydd of Gwerngwy (c.
1105) ap Heilyn (c. 1075) ap Eunydd of Dyffryn Clwyd (c. 1045)
Pen. 131, 98 cites "Dafydd ap Cynwrig ap Robert" married "Nest ferch Meurig Lloyd
ap Meurig Fychan ap Ynyr Fychan"
Cardiff 4.265, 190 cites "Marsli, dau of Edmund Stanley son of Sir William Stanley"
married "Dafydd Fychan ap Ithel ap Dafydd", while Pen. 131, 98 extends that to "Ithel ap Dafydd ap Cynwrig". While a
man called "Edmund son of William Stanley" married a lady of Mostyn whom we date to c. 1373, it was not necessarily the same
man who fathered this Marsli. The Stanley family spanned some 200 years with at least 6 consecutive men called Sir William;
how many of those Williams named a son Edmund is not known.
Pen. 128, 153a cites "Mallt ferch Dafydd ap Cynwrig" married "Bato ap Madog ap
Gruffudd ap Madog ap Iorwerth", while Harleian 1972, 74v extends his ancestry to "Madog ap Iorwerth ap Ieuaf ap
Iorwerth ap Einion" and Pen. 287, 182 extends that to "Iorwerth ap Einion ap Ithel ap Eunydd". All sources mistake this
Eunydd for the Eunydd ap Morien of c. 1045; our construction makes him the grandson of that man and thus makes him the Eunydd
Gwerngwy to whom the lands of Gresford and Trefalun in Maelor were granted in the 12th century
77. Iorwerth ap Robert ap Bleddyn, born c. 1370
His wife is unknown, but he had a son and a daughter:
91.
Einion ap Iorwerth ap Robert
Marged
ferch Iorwerth ap Robert, born c. 1405. She married Iorwerth Fychan (c. 1400) ap Gronwy (c. 1370) ap Madog Goch (c.
1335). See #72 above.
Pen. 134, 108 cites "Iorwerth ap Robert ap Bleddyn" as father of Einion
Cardiff 3.8, 91 cites "Marged ferch Iorwerth ap Robert" married "Iorwerth Fychan
ap Gronwy ap Madog Goch ap Ednyfed ap Maredudd ap Einion ap Rhiryd"
78. Cynwrig ap Robert ap Bleddyn, born c. 1370
He married Mali (c. 1370) ferch Bleddyn (c. 1335)
ap Gwilym (c. 1300) ap Gruffudd (c. 1265) ap Heilyn (c. 1230) ap Sir Tudor (c. 1200) ap Ednyfed Fychan (c. 1165) They
had 3 sons and a daughter:
Deicws ap
Cynwrig ap Robert, born c. 1405
Rhys ap Cynwrig
ap Robert, born c. 1405
Richard ap
Cynwrig ap Robert, born c. 1410. He married Angharad (c. 1425) ferch Bleddyn (c. 1395) ap Gronwy (c. 1365) ap Cynwrig
(c. 1330) ap Ithel Lloyd (c. 1300) ap Cadwgan (c. 1270) ap Ithel Lloyd (c. 1240) Cadwgan (c. 1210) ap Llywarch Fychan
(c. 1180) ap Llywarch Goch (c. 1150) descended from Llywarch Hwlbwrch of Rhos
Gwenllian
ferch Cynwrig ap Robert, born c. 1400. She married first, Iorwerth (c. 1385) ap Einion (c. 1355) ap Gruffudd (c. 1320)
ap Llewelyn (c. 1290) ap Cynwrig (c. 1260) ap Osbwrn Wyddel (c. 1230). She married secondly, James Eyton (c. 1390) ap
Madog (c. 1360) ap Ieuan (c. 1330) ap Madog (c. 1300) ap Llewelyn (c. 1270) ap Griffri (c. 1240) ap Cadwgan of Eyton (c. 1210)
ap Meilyr (c. 1180) ap Elidyr (c. 1152) ap Rhys Sais II (c. 1124) descended from Tudor Trevor.
Pen. 129, 116 cites "Cynwrig ap Robert ap Bleddyn" married "Mali ferch Bleddyn
ap Gwilym ap Gruffudd", while Pen. 131, 93 extends her ancestry to "Gwilym ap Gruffudd ap Heilyn ap Tudor ap Ednyfed Fychan"
Pen. 135, 430 & 439 cite "Deicws ap Cynwrig ap Robert". Bartrum dates
Deicws c. 1400, our only reason for attaching him to this Cynwrig ap Robert. Also see #90 below
Pen. 131, 53 & 56; Pen. 129, 116; and Pen. 128, 603b cite "Rhys ap Cynwrig
ap Robert ap Bleddyn". We believe the marriages assigned him by Bartrum actually belong to a different Rhys ap Cynwrig
ap Robert, #90 below
Pen. 139(1), 310 cites "Richard ap Cynwrig ap Robert" married "Angharad ferch
Bleddyn ap Gronwy ap Cynwrig ap Ithel Lloyd ap Cadwgan", while Pen. 129, 71; Pen. 129, 134; and Pen. 128, 258a extend her
ancestry to "Ithel Lloyd ap Cadwgan ap Llywarch Fychan ap Llywarch Goch". Bartrum says 2 generations belong between
Ithel Lloyd and Llywarch Fychan; we suggest the missing name is Cynwrig Fychan as father of Ithel Lloyd (not his brother as
Bartrum shows him)
Pen. 129, 128/9; Pen. 127, 18; and Pen. 128, 614a & 656b cite "Gwenllian
ferch Cynwrig ap Robert" married "Iorwerth ap Einion ap Gruffudd", while Pen. 129, 51 and Pen. 127, 27 extend his ancestry
to "Einion ap Gruffudd ap Llewelyn ap Cynwrig ap Osbwrn". A single source (Pen. 127, 150) says Gwenllian was a daughter
of "Cynwrig ap Robert ap Iorwerth" #58 above, but that Cynwrig was born far too early to be the father of this lady.
The other sources which cite her marriage do not extend her ancestry beyond Cynwrig ap Robert; our making that Robert a son
of Bleddyn is chronologically sound.
Pen. 131, 130 cites "Gwenllian ferch Cynwrig ap Robert" married "James Eyton
ap Madog ap Ieuan ap Madog ap Llewelyn ap Griffri ap Cadwgan ap Meilyr ap Elidyr ap Rhys Sais". Of 7 sources which cite
this marriage (without extending his pedigree all the way back to Rhys Sais), 3 of those call Gwenllian a daughter of Cynwrig
ap Robert ap Iorwerth and the other 4 sources do not name Robert's father. See comments in the paragraph immediately
above
79. Gronwy ap Tudor ap Iorwerth Sais, born c.
1375
His wife is unknown, but he had a son and a daughter:
Rhys
Fychan ap Gronwy ap Tudor, born c. 1405
Angharad
ferch Gronwy ap Tudor, born c. 1405. She married Tudor (c. 1390) ap Ieuan (c. 1360) ap Gruffudd (c. 1325) ap Dafydd
(c. 1295) ap Einion (c. 1265) ap Gronwy (c. 1230) ap Cynwrig (c. 1200) ap Gronwy Foel (c. 1170) which Gronwy Foel was a brother
of Ednyfed Fychan
Pen. 131, 48 and Pen. 134, 208 cite "Rhys Fychan ap Gronwy ap Tudor ap Iorwerth
Sais ap Robert Goch"
Pen. 128, 767a cites "Angharad ferch Gronwy ap Tudor ap Iorwerth Sais" married
"Tudor ap Ieuan ap Gruffudd ap Dafydd ap Einion", while Pen. 177, 165 extends his ancestry to "Dafydd ap Einion ap Gronwy
ap Cynwrig ap Gronwy Foel"
80. Tudor ap Ithel ap Rhys, born c. 1360
He married Mali (c. 1365) ferch Bleddyn
(c. 1330) ap Ieuan (c. 1300) ap Madog (c. 1265) ap Robert (c. 1235) ap Hywel (c. 1205) ap Sir Robert Pounderling (c.
1180). Sir Robert was constable of Diserth Castle in Tegeingl. If, in fact, this family descended from
a Norman knight, it is most unusual that none of them adopted his surname but bore distictly Welsh names. One might
suggest Hywel was his son by a Welsh mistress and was not acknowledged as his child by Sir Robert. Tudor and Mail had
a son:
Ithel ap Tudor ap Ithel, born c. 1400. He married Annes (c. 1415) ferch Madog (c. 1385) ap Ieuan (c. 1355) ap Iorwerth
(c. 1320) ap Dafydd (c. 1290) ap Meilyr (c. 1255) ap Gronwy (c. 1220) descended from Owain ap Edwin of Tegeingl
Pen. 133, 32 cites "Tudor ap Ithel ap Rhys" married "Mali ferch Bleddyn ap Ieuan
ap Madog", while Pen. 127, 64 extends her ancestry to "Madog ap Robert ap Hywel ap Robert Pounderling"
Pen. 135, 406 cites "Ithel ap Tudor ap Ithel" married "Annes ferch Madog ap Ieuan,
while Pen. 128, 597a extends her ancestry to "Madog ap Ieuan ap Iorwerth ap Dafydd ap Meilyr ap Gronwy". No source gives
a satisfactory pedigree to connect this Gronwy with Owain ap Edwin; Bartrum charts him as "Meilyr ap Gronwy ap Meilyr ap Owain
ap Edwin", but shows a 4 generation gap in that construction.
81. Dafydd ap Madog ap Maredudd, born c. 1360
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
Gruffudd ap Dafydd ap Madog, born c. 1395. He married Lleuci (c. 1405) ferch Madog (c. 1370) ap Gruffudd Fychan (c.
1340). See #83 below
Pen. 287, 229 cites "Gruffudd ap Dafydd ap Madog ap Maredudd" married "Lleuci
ferch Madog ap Gruffudd Fychan ap Gruffudd"
82. Gruffudd ap Madog ap Maredudd, born c. 1360
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
Madog ap Gruffudd ap Madog, born c. 1390. He had a son:
Ieuan ap Madog ap Gruffudd, born c. 1420. He had a daughter:
Llueci ferch Ieuan ap Madog, born c. 1455. She married Hywel (c. 1445) ap Ieuan (c. 1410) ap Llewelyn (c. 1375) ap Gruffudd
(c. 1345) ap Iorwerth Fychan (c. 1315) ap Iorwerth (c. 1285) ap Ieuaf (c. 1255) ap Llywarch (c. 1225) ap Ieuaf (c. 1195) Nynnio
(c. 1160) ap Cynwrig (c. 1125) ap Rhiwallon (c. 1095) descended from Tudor Trevor
Pen. 129, 129 cites "Lleuci ferch Ieuan ap Madog ap Gruffudd" married "Hywel
ap Ieuan ap Llewelyn". Pen. 127, 183, extends "Hywel ap Ieuan ap Llewelyn ap Gruffudd ap Iorwerth Fychan".
Pen. 128, 155a extends "Llewelyn ap Gruffudd ap Iorwerth Fychan ap Iorwerth ap Ieuaf" but makes that Ieuaf "ap Nynnio"
thus omitting 2 generations
83. Madog ap Gruffudd Fychan ap Gruffudd, born c. 1370
His wife is unknown, but he had a son and a daughter:
Ieuan ap Madog ap Gruffudd Fychan, born c. 1405. He had a daughter:
Morfydd ferch Ieuan ap Madog, born c. 1440. She married Cynwrig (c. 1435) ap Ieuan (c. 1405) ap Dafydd (c. 1370) ap
Cynwrig (c. 1340) ap Ieuan (c. 1310) ap Gruffudd (c. 1280) ap Madog Ddu (c. 1250) descended from Aldud ap Owain ap Edwin of
Tegeingl.
Lleuci ferch Madog ap Gruffudd Fychan, born c. 1405. She married Gruffudd (c. 1395) ap Dafydd (c. 1360) ap Madog (c.
1330). See #81 above
Pen. 134, 211 and Pen. 135, 410 cite "Morfydd ferch Ieuan ap Madog" married "Cynwrig ap
Ieuan ap Dafydd". Pen. 127, 18 calls her "Morfydd ferch Ieuan ap Madog ap Gruffudd" omitting the "Fychan" from Gruffudd.
Our construction gives Gruffudd a son, Gruffudd Fychan, as father of Madog and dates Morfydd a full generation later than
Bartrum's chart. (see next paragraph for evidence there was a Gruffudd Fychan ap Gruffudd) Bartrum dates both
Cynwrig (her husband) and Ieuan the father of Cynwrig to the same generation to compensate for making Morfydd's pedigree 1
generation short. Pen. 131, 52 & 102 extend her husband's ancestry to "Ieuan ap Dafydd ap Cynwrig ap Ieuan ap Gruffudd
ap Madog Ddu"
Pen. 287, 229 and Cardiff 4.265, 359v cite "Lleuci
ferch Madog ap Gruffudd Fychan" married "Gruffudd ap Dafydd ap Madog". Bartrum's chart hopelessly confounds this family
with another having similar names. See #66 above
84. Ieuan ap Madog ap Gruffudd, born c. 1380
He married Angharad (c. 1385) ferch Hywel Coetmor
(c. 1350) ap Gruffudd Fychan (c. 1320) ap Gruffudd (c. 1290) ap Dafydd Goch (c. 1260) ap Dafydd (c. 1230) ap Gruffudd (c.
1200) ap Llewelyn (c. 1170) ap Iorwerth of Penmachno (c. 1135) ap Nefydd Hardd (c. 1105). They had a son and a daughter:
Madog Fychan ap Ieuan ap Madog, born c. 1410. He married first, Cathryn (c. 1425) ferch Gruffudd (c. 1395) ap Llewelyn
(c. 1360) ap Gruffudd (c. 1330) ap Llewelyn (c. 1300) ap Dafydd (c. 1265) ap Llewelyn (c. 1230) ap Tudor (c. 1195) ap Iorwerth
(c. 1165) ap Cynwrig (c. 1135) ap Genillin Farchog (c. 1100) ap Meirion Goch (c. 1070) ap Merwydd Goch (c. 1040) ap Collwyn
(c. 1010) ap Tangno (c. 975). He married secondly, a daughter (c. 1410) of Hywel (c. 1375) ap Madog (c. 1340) ap Ieuan
(c. 1305) ap Einion (c. 1275) ap Gruffudd (c. 1240) ap Hywel (c. 1210) ap Maredudd (c. 1175) ap Einion (c. 1140) ap Caradog
(c. 1110) ap Gwgan (c. 1075) ap Merwydd Goch (c. 1040), a cousin line of his first wife.
Marged ferch Ieuan ap Madog, born c. 1415. She married Gruffudd (c. 1410) ap Hywel (c. 1380) ap Tudor (c. 1345) ap Gronwy
(c. 1315) ap Gruffudd (c. 1285) ap Madog (c. 1255) ap Iorwerth (c. 1225) ap Madog (c. 1190) ap Rhiryd Flaidd of Penllyn (c.
1155)
Pen. 127, 17/18 cites "Ieuan ap Madog ap Gruffudd" married "Angharad ferch Hywel
Coetmor" and extends her ancestry back to Llewelyn Fawr
Pen. 134, 455 and Pen. 135, 174 cite "Madog Fychan ap Ieuan ap Madog" married
"Cathryn ferch Gruffudd ap Llewelyn", while Pen. 177, 126 extends her ancestry to "Gruffudd ap Llewelyn ap Gruffudd ap Llewelyn
ap Dafydd ap Llewelyn ap Tudor ap Iorwerth ap Cynwrig ap Genillin Farchog ap Meirion Goch". HLG 9d cites "Genillin ap
Meirion ap Merwydd ap Collwyn ap Tangno"
Pen. 131, 96 cites "Madog Fychan ap Ieuan ap Madog" married "a daughter
of Hywel ap Madog ap Ieuan ap Einion", while Pen. 127, 22 extends her ancestry to "Ieuan ap Einion ap Gruffudd ap Hywel ap
Maredudd ap Einion" but omits Caradog by continuing "ap Gwgan ap Merwydd Goch ap Collwyn". Pen. 127, 67 & 188 furnish
the missing generation as "Maredudd ap Einion ap Caradog ap Gwgan ap Merwydd Goch"
Cardiff 4.265, 360 cites "Marged ferch Ieuan ap Madog" married "Gruffudd
Trefgoed ap Hywel ap Tudor". Pen. 128, 643b extends his ancestry to "Hywel ap Tudor ap Gronwy", while Pen. 131, 107
extends that to "Tudor ap Gronwy ap Gruffudd ap Madog". Pen. 131, 287 and Pen. 127, 37 extend that to "Gruffudd
ap Madog ap Iorwerth", while Pen. 131, 99 & 281 continue as "Madog ap Iorwerth ap Madog ap Rhiryd Flaidd"
GENERATION 11:
85. Ithel ap Jenkin ap Dafydd, born c. 1405
He married Sioned (c. 1410) ferch Ieuan Teg
(c. 1375) ap Cynwrig (c. 1340) ap Gruffudd Ddu (c. 1310) ap Maredudd Grach (c. 1275) ap Einion Wyddel (c. 1245) ap Eyrn (c.
1215) ap Elfel (c. 1180) ap Ystifyn (c. 1150). They had a daughter:
Cathryn ferch Ithel ap Jenkin, born c. 1440. She married Benet (c. 1440) ap Dafydd (c. 1410) ap Llewelyn Fychan (c.
1380) ap Llewelyn Goch (c. 1350) ap Gruffudd (c. 1315) ap Madog Ddu (c. 1280) ap Rhiryd (c. 1250) ap Llewelyn (c. 1215) ap
Owain (c. 1180) ap Llewelyn (c. 1150) ap Owain (c. 1115) ap Aldud (c. 1085) ap Owain (c. 1050) ap Edwin of Tegeingl (c. 1020)
Pen. 287, 287 cites "Ithel ap Jenkin ap Dafydd" married "Sioned ferch Ieuan Teg
ap Cynwrig", while Pen. 131, 52 extends her ancestry to "Ieuan Teg ap Cynwrig ap Gruffudd Ddu ap Maredudd Grach ap Einion
Wyddel ap Eyrn ap Elfel ap Ystifyn". No sources cite the ancestry of Ystifyn, but we suspect he was the son of Iorwerth
ap Aldud ap Owain ap Edwin; not only does the chronology fit, but Iorwerth ap Aldud had another Einion Wyddel as a great-grandson
Dwnn ii, 300 cites "Cathryn ferch Ithel ap Jenkin ap Dafydd ap Iorwerth" married
"Benet ap Dafydd ap Llewelyn Fychan ap Llewelyn Goch ap Gruffudd", while Pen. 134, 110 extends his ancestry to "Llewelyn Goch
ap Gruffudd ap Madog Ddu". Pen. 131, 52 & 93 & 102; and Pen. 129, 62 extend that to "Madog Ddu ap Rhiryd ap
Llewelyn ap Owain ap Aldud". But that construction lacks 2 generations and we believe a repeating pair of "Llewelyn
ap Owain" has been omitted. Another branch descended from Aldud had the string of names "Gruffudd ap Madog (with or
without Ddu) ap Rhiryd ap Llewelyn ap Owain ap Aldud" and the sources incorrectly assume these were the same men at the top
of Benet's pedigree.
86. Jenkin Goch ap Cynwrig ap Madog, born c. 1390
He married Efa (c. 1400) ferch Ieuan (c.
1365) ap Llewelyn Chwith (c. 1335) ap Gruffudd (c. 1305) ap Dafydd Dinllais (c. 1270) ap Dafydd (c. 1235) ap Madog (c. 1205)
ap Richard (c. 1175) ap Hywel (c. 1140) ap Llywarch (c. 1110) ap Rhiryd (c. 1080) ap Owain (c. 1050) ap Edwin of Tegeingl
(c. 1020). They had a son and a daughter:
Gruffudd
ap Jenkin Goch ap Cynwrig, born c. 1420. He married Gwenllian (c. 1425) ferch Gruffudd (c. 1390) ap Einion (c. 1355)
ap Gronwy Sais (c. 1320) ap Einion (c. 1290) ap Llywarch (c. 1260) ap Llewelyn (c. 1230) ap Ithel Talfrith of Ystrad Alun
(c. 1200) ap Trahaearn (c. 1170)
Annes
ferch Jenkin Goch ap Cynwrig, born c. 1425. She married Gruffudd (c. 1415) ap Hywel (c. 1380) ap Gruffudd (c. 1350)
ap Dafydd (c. 1315) ap Gronwy (c. 1285) ap Meilyr (c. 1250) descended from Owain ap Edwin of Tegeingl
Pen. 176, 58; Pen. 177, 50 cite "Jenkin Goch ap Cynwrig ap Madog" married "Efa
ferch Ieuan ap Llewelyn Chwith", while Pen. 128, 252b extends her ancestry to "Llewelyn Chwith ap Gruffudd ap Dafydd Dinllais
ap Dafydd ap Madog ap Richard ap Hywel ap Llywarch ap Rhiryd ap Owain ap Edwin"
Pen. 177, 150 cites "Gruffudd ap Jenkin Goch ap Cynwrig ap Madog ap Gruffudd"
married "Gwenllian ferch Einion ap Gronwy Sais ap Einion", while Pen. 127, 136 extends her ancestry to "Gronwy Sais ap Einion
ap Llywarch ap Llewelyn ap Ithel Talfrith ap Trahaearn Goch". We identify the latter with Trahaearn ap Iorwerth ap Einion
ap Rhys of Garthmyl for these reasons: (1) That Trahaearn is often called "Goch" by historians who mistake him for his
great-grandson of that name; (2) while he resided at Garthmyl in Cydewain, that manor was a grant for his military services
to Gwenwynwyn, king of south Powys. He had lived in south Powys ever since his great-grandfather, Rhys ap Llewelyn Fychan
ap Llewelyn Aurdorchog, Lord of Ial and Ystrad Alun, married a lady from Cydewain. That Rhys was a younger brother of
Ithel Felyn who succeeded his father as Lord of Ial, and while not choosing to remain in Ial, Rhys did inherit a share of
the lands formerly held by Llewelyn Aurdorchog. We suspect Ithel Talfrith was born in Garthmyl but inherited paternal
lands in Ystrad Alun and chose to live there since Garthmyl was small and he had at least 3 brothers...only one of whom would
remain there; and (3) the names Ithel, Trahaearn and Llewelyn were especially favored by this family
Dwnn ii, 349 cites "Annes ferch Jenkin Goch ap Cynwrig" married "Gruffudd ap
Hywel ap Gruffudd ap Dafydd ap Gronwy ap Meilyr ap Gronwy" but attached that Gronwy directly to Owain ap Edwin. See
#80 above for the problems in that family's pedigree
87. Llewelyn ap Dafydd ap Madog Fychan, born
c. 1395
He married Efa (c. 1405) ferch Bleddyn (c.
1370) ap Einion Fychan (c. 1340) ap Einion (c. 1310) ap Cadwgan Ddu (c. 1280) ap Cadwgan Goch (c. 1250) descended from Ithel
Felyn of Ial. They had a daughter:
Unnamed daughter ferch Llewelyn ap Dafydd, born c. 1430. She married Dafydd (c. 1430) ap Ieuan (c. 1400) ap Dafydd (c.
1370) ap Maredudd (c. 1340) ap Iorwerth (c. 1305) ap Llewelyn (c. 1270) ap Iorwerth (c. 1235) ap Heilyn (c. 1205) ap Cowryd
(c. 1175) ap Cadfan (c. 1140)
Pen. 134, 257 cites "Llewelyn ap Dafydd ap Madog Fychan" married "a daughter
of Bleddyn ap Einion Fychan", while Pen. 139(1), 320 cites (without mentioning her marriage) "Efa ferch Bleddyn ap Einion
Fychan ap Einion ap Cadwgan Ddu ap Cadwgan Goch". See #71 above for the ancestry of Cadwgan Goch
The marriage of the unnamed daughter of Llewelyn ap Dafydd is shown on Bartrum's
chart "Ednywain Bendew 6" but no sources are given since both spouses were born a generation after the year 1400 (Bartrum's
charts and sources from 1400-1600 are not presently available to us)
88. Cynwrig ap Ithel Fychan ap Cynwrig, born
c. 1400
He married Tangwystl (c. 1415) ferch Gruffudd
Lloyd (c. 1385) ap Dafydd (c. 1355) ap Maredudd (c. 1320) ap Rhys (c. 1285) ap Gruffudd (c. 1250) ap Llewelyn (c. 1220) ap
Meilyr (c. 1190) ap Cynan (c. 1155) ap Pyll (c. 1120) ap Cynan (c. 1090) ap Llywarch Goch (c. 1055) ap Llywarch Hwlbwrch of
Rhos (c. 1020). Llywarch Hwlbwrch
served as treasurer for King Gruffudd ap Llewelyn (1039-1063). Cynwrig
had 2 sons:
Harri
ap Cynwrig ap Ithel Fychan, born c. 1435. He married Alice, daughter of Simond ap Thomas Thelwal and had 2 sons:
John ap Harri ap Cynwrig, born c. 1470. He married Cathryn (c. 1480) ferch Ithel (c. 1445) ap Jenkin (c. 1410) ap
Dafydd (c. 1380) ap Hywel (c. 1350) ap Einion (c. 1315) ap Ieuan (c. 1285) ap Ithel (c. 1255) ap Gruffudd (c. 1220) ap Dafydd
(c. 1185) ap Gronwy (c. 1150) ap Maredudd (c. 1120) ap Uchdryd of Cyfeiliog (c. 1085) ap Uchdryd (c. 1055) ap Edwin of Tegeingl
(c. 1020)
Elis ap Harri ap Cynwrig, born c. 1465. He married Margaret (c. 1465), daughter of John Conway Hen (c. 1430)
John ap Cynwrig
ap Ithel Fychan, born c. 1430. He married Janet (c. 1435), daughter of John Conway (c. 1400). Their sons adopted the
surname Jones and resided in Chilton near Shrewsbury.
Montgomeryshire Collections, vol xiii, pp 390 "Pedigree of Jones of Chilton"
cites "Cynwrig ap Ithel ap Cynwrig ap Robert ap Iorwerth" married "Tangwystl ferch Gruffudd Lloyd". Pen. 138, 124 make
this "Gruffudd Lloyd ap Dafydd ap Maredudd ap Rhys ap Gruffudd ap Llewelyn ap Meilyr ap Cynan ap Pyll ap Cynan ap Llywarch
Hwlbwrch", but Bartrum's charts show a missing generation between Pyll and Llywarch. We would make it "Pyll ap Cynan
ap Llywarch Goch ap Llywarch Hwlbwrch"
Dwnn ii, 303/304 cites "Harri ap Cynwrig ap Ithel Fychan" married "Alice, daughter
of Simond son of Thomas Thelwal" and says they had a son named John
Dwnn ii, 296 cites "Ellis ap Harri ap Cynwrig ap Ithel Fychan" married "Margaret,
daughter of John Conwy Hen". This was the Conwy family of Bryn Euryn
Pen. 287, 225/226 cites "John ap Harri ap Cynwrig ap Ithel Fychan" married "Cathryn
ferch Ithel ap Jenkin ap Dafydd ap Hywel ap Einion ap Ieuan ap Ithel ap Gruffudd ap Dafydd ap Gronwy ap Maredudd ap Uchdryd".
See #22 above for our identification of that Uchdryd
Harl. 1971 cites "John ap Cynwrig ap Ithel Fychan" married "Janet daughter
of John Conway". This was the Conway family of Bodrhyddan, not the better-known family of Bryn Euryn. The children
of this marriage apparently inherited Chilton from their mother
89. Dafydd ap Ithel Fychan ap Cynwrig, born
c. 1405
He married Angharad (c. 1410) ferch Cynwrig Fychan
(c. 1375) ap Cynwrig (c. 1345) ap Madog (c. 1315) ap Iorwerth (c. 1285) ap Dafydd (c. 1255) ap Cadwgan Lloyd (c. 1220) ap
Gwgan (c. 1185) ap Cynan (c. 1150) descended from Llywarch Hwlbwrch. See #88 above for the intervening generations.
They had a daughter and 4 sons:
Cathryn ferch Dafydd ap Ithel Fychan, born c. 1440. She married Rhys (c. 1440) ap Cynwrig (c. 1410) ap Robert (c. 1375).
See #90 below
Gruffudd ap Dafydd ap Ithel Fychan, born c. 1440. He married Marsli (c. 1455) dau. of John Conwy Hen (c. 1430)
John ap Dafydd ap Ithel Fychan, born c. 1440.
Ieuan ap Dafydd ap Ithel Fychan, born c. 1440
Ithel ap Dafydd ap Ithel Fychan, born c. 1435. He is the ancestor of the family of Evans of Northop
Pen. 128, 601b cites "Dafydd ap Ithel Fychan ap Cynwrig" married "Angharad ferch
Cynwrig Fychan ap Cynwrig ap Madog ap Iorwerth ap Dafydd ap Cadwgan Lloyd ap Gwgan ap Cynan". This source makes Cynan
the son of "Llewelyn Fychan ap Llywarch Goch" but that Cynan was 2 generations too old to be Gwgan's father (as admitted in
Bartrum's chart). We identify him with the same Cynan of c. 1150 discussed in #88 above
Pen. 129, 113 and Pen. 127, 127 cite "Cathryn ferch Dafydd ap Ithel Fychan ap
Cynwrig" married "Rhys ap Cynwrig ap Robert"
Dwnn ii, 298 & 325/6 cite "Dafydd ap Ithel Fychan ap Cynwrig" as the father
of Gruffudd
Dwnn ii, 325/326 cites "Gruffudd ap Dafydd ap Ithel Fychan" married "Marsli ferch
John Conwy Hen" while Dwnn ii, 298 extends her ancestry to "John Conwy Hen ap Jenkin Conwy ap John Conwy".
Dwnn ii, 305 cites "Dafydd ap Ithel Fychan ap Cynwrig" as the father of John
Dwnn ii, 311 cites "Dafydd ap Ithel Fychan" as the father of Ieuan
Dwnn ii, 326 & Vis of Shropshire, 178 cite "Dafydd ap Ithel Fychan" as the
father of Ithel. It was Ieuan, the son of Ithel, from whom the Evans family of Northop took their surname
90. Cynwrig ap Robert ap Cynwrig, born c. 1410
His wife is unknown, but he had possibly
2 sons and a daughter:
(?) Deicws ap Cynwrig
ap Robert, born c. 1445
Rhys ap Cynwrig ap Robert, born c. 1440. He married first, Mabli (c. 1445) ferch Dafydd (c. 1415) ap Rhys (c. 1385)
ap Ieuan (c. 1355) ap Llewelyn Ddu (c. 1320) ap Dafydd (c. 1290) ap Gruffudd (c. 1260) ap Iorwerth (c. 1230) ap Madog (c.
1200) ap Gruffudd (c. 1170) ap Owain Brogyntyn (c. 1140). He married secondly, Cathryn (c. 1440) ferch Dafydd (c. 1405) ap
Ithel Fychan (c. 1370) of #89 above.
Angharad ferch Cynwrig ap Robert, born c. 1445. She married Ieuan (c. 1445) ap Tudor (c. 1415) ap Ieuan (c. 1385) ap
Bleddyn (c. 1350) ap Madog Goch (c. 1315) ap Heilyn Fychan (c. 1280) ap Heilyn (c. 1250) ap Ieuaf (c. 1215) ap Griffri (c.
1180) ap Gronwy (c. 1145) ap Owain (c. 1115) ap Uchdryd Cyfeiliog (c. 1085) ap Uchdryd (c. 1055) ap Edwin
of Tegeingl (c. 1020)
Pen. 287, 287 cites a "Deicws ap Cynwrig ap Robert"
as a sister of Angharad. While it is unclear if there were two men of this name (See #78 above), no families are known
to have descended from a c. 1445 Deicws
Since Mabli occurs well after 1400, our source for the marriage to Rhys ap Cynwrig
ap Robert is chart "Ednywain Bendew 4" in Bartrum's Welsh Genealogies (where he matches her with the wrong Rhys ap Cynwrig).
Her father is cited in Pen. 131 as "Dafydd ap Rhys ap Ieuan ap Llewelyn Ddu ap Dafydd ap Gruffudd ap Iorwerth ap Owain Brogyntyn".
But the Iorwerth in that list married a lady born c. 1240 while Owain Brogyntyn was born c. 1140. Dwnn ii, 112 cites
an "Iorwerth ap Madog ap Gruffudd ap Owain Brogyntyn" which would meet the chronological requirements.
Pen. 129, 113 cites the second wife of Rhys. See #89 above
Pen. 287, 287 cites "Angharad ferch Cynwrig ap Robert" married Ieuan ap Tudor
ap Ieuan", while Dwnn i, 77 extends his ancestry to "Tudor ap Ieuan ap Bleddyn ap Madog Goch ap Philip Fychan ap
Heilyn ap Ieuaf ap Gruffudd. Pen. 131, 131 corrects that to "Madog Goch ap Heilyn Fychan ap Heilyn ap Ieuaf ap Gruffudd
ap Llewelyn", while Pen. 176, 251 extends that to "Ieuaf ap Gruffudd ap Llewelyn ap Owain". Pen. 131, 93 & 102 complete
it as "Llewelyn ap Owain ap Aldud"
91. Einion ap Iorwerth ap Robert, born c. 1395
