NOTES:
[1] Roger was the eldest son of Hugh of Normandy; Hugh had served
as a captian under Roger of Montgomery at the Battle of Hastings and was among his principal assistants when the latter was
named Earl of Shrewsbury to secure the central border against Welsh incursions. He called his lands Caus (Caux)
after his Norman homelands.
[2] Certain of the leading Welshmen allied with England in the 13th century when
Llewelyn Fawr and Llewelyn the Last of Gwynedd sought to expand their rule to other Welsh princedoms. Such alliances
were often sealed by inter-family marriages
