NOTES:
[1] This family claims ancestry from Walcelin de Douai from Normandy, a man born
c. 1040; his name does not appear among those men known to have been at the Battle of Hastings. Probably a retainer
of the Mortimer family of Wigmore, the manor of Brampton in Herefordshire was acquired c. 1200 by marriage to a Mortimer lady
[2] By this marriage, the Harley family acquired the manor and castle of Brampton
which they still held during the English Civil War c. 1644. It is often called Brampton Bryan
SOURCES:
[1] Visitation of Shropshire of 1623, pp 304 for the chart down to the marriages
of the two Brampton ladies c. 1300. That pedigree contains much anachronistic data which we have emended to follow
a realistic timeline
